Eating Grilled Sticky Rice at Taunggyi Morning Market Taunggyi local food

When talking about the morning market of Taunggyi, the capital city of Shan State in Myanmar, for me, mr.hotsia, this is the starting point to experience the authentic lifestyle and flavors of local food that you must not miss.

I arrived in Taunggyi on a cool morning. The morning market was bustling with people of various ethnicities, including Tai Yai, Shan, and other local groups, gathering to buy fresh produce, ready-to-eat food, and local spices. The aroma of fresh herbs and local seasonings greeted me as soon as I stepped in.

One of the dishes I had to try was “Grilled Sticky Rice,” which is sticky rice wrapped in banana leaves and grilled over embers, commonly called “Grilled Sticky Rice” by locals. The soft sticky rice infused with the scent of banana leaves and the smoky aroma from grilling made it a snack I loved so much that I sought it out at several spots in the market.

There were also many other interesting local dishes, such as spicy rice noodles, Shan-style spicy fermented fish chili paste that is hot yet balanced, and even sour fish curry served with fresh local vegetables with a unique taste. I spoke with the vendors, most of whom spoke a little Thai, which made exchanging knowledge about food and culture much easier.

The Taunggyi morning market is not only about food but also full of colors from Tai Yai woven fabrics, silverware, and local handicrafts that villagers bring to sell. I stopped to watch a skilled weaver working diligently and listened to stories about weaving traditions passed down through generations. It was another cultural aspect I experienced up close.

For travelers interested in tasting local food and learning about the Tai Yai lifestyle in Shan State, I recommend planning a trip to Taunggyi in the early morning because the market opens at dawn and is very lively. The morning market closes before noon, but the impressions and flavors will stay with you for many days.
