Dawei Burmese Girls: The charm of Tanintharyi Region you must experience yourself
As mr.hotsia, who often travels in Southeast Asia, one of the experiences I cherish and want to share is meeting Burmese girls in Dawei, a small peaceful town in Tanintharyi Region. Known to Thai people as Dawei, this town is not only a gateway between Myanmar and Thailand but also a cultural melting pot with unique charm, especially the Dawei girls who are lovely and warm in the true Burmese style.
Dawei is located in Tanintharyi Region, bordering Thailand’s Kanchanaburi and Ranong provinces. Traveling from the Thai border to Dawei is very convenient, taking only about 4 hours. This made me choose to travel by myself to truly experience the atmosphere of this town.Traveling Dawei, Tanintharyi Region on Your OwnThis is one of the articles I wrote to share travel experiences and small tips to help you explore Dawei easily.
Lifestyle and Background of Dawei Burmese Girls
Dawei girls have distinct characteristics in their clothing and culture passed down through generations. Most wear beautiful and modest traditional outfits, reflecting a blend of gentleness and inner strength. Many speak Thai due to close ties with Thailand, especially working in southern border provinces like Kanchanaburi or Ranong. Some work in rubber tapping, others in fishing, so when you visit Dawei, communication is rarely a problem.
Another interesting aspect is their simple lifestyle filled with warmth within the community. Dawei girls and locals love peace, avoid trouble, and behave well. This is evident in various traditional events I had the chance to join, such as the Loy Krathong End of Buddhist Lent festival in Dawei, a major annual event held every October.
Experience of Loy Krathong End of Buddhist Lent Festival in Dawei
When I traveled to Dawei in October 2013, it coincided with the Loy Krathong End of Buddhist Lent festival. The atmosphere was lively and warm beyond my expectations. Every house and temple was decorated with lights and candles for three consecutive nights. Locals, both children and adults, participated wholeheartedly.
I stayed at Golden Hotel in the city center and arranged for a motorcycle taxi to pick me up at 3:30 AM to see the festival starting at 4 AM. The way they float krathongs here is different from ours; they use special slides to place the krathongs neatly into the Dawei River. The krathongs sold resemble monk's alms bowls, containing candles, incense, flowers, and money. It was a beautiful and meaningful sight.
On stage, there were performances of traditional Burmese music and dance. The Dawei girls dancing on stage were so beautiful that I recorded clips to keep as memories. Although the event started early, the atmosphere was calm and orderly, with no drunkenness like at Thai temple fairs. This gave me a unique perspective on the charm and lifestyle of Dawei people.
Sampling Food and Exploring Dawei Market
As a food lover, tasting local dishes is always a highlight of my trips. In Dawei, locals favor mataba for breakfast — a puffed roti dipped in rich curry. Many shops sell mataba alongside distinctive Burmese coffee. I personally enjoy coffee with milk and a white powder that gives a perfectly sweet and creamy taste.
For lunch, I tried seafood recommended by locals, which was much cheaper than in Thailand. However, communication was sometimes difficult, resulting in dishes that didn’t always meet expectations. If you’re interested in Dawei seafood, I recommend checking reviews.Dawei SeafoodTo find the best spots for you
Additionally, I explored Dawei markets full of fresh produce and local goods such asDawei Vegetable MarketandMorning Fish MarketHere, you can see the lively daily life of locals shopping for their meals. It’s an enjoyable and insightful scene.
Trip Recommendations and Tips for Traveling in Dawei
If you plan to visit Dawei, I suggest renting a motorcycle with a local driver-guide. This makes traveling to various spots more convenient and safer. I chose to have the driver take me to Dawei Sea, a quiet and beautiful beach distinctly different from those in Thailand.
Also, in Dawei town, there are interesting places like the Big Buddha Temple orShinpin Pagodawhich is believed to emit light from its top on auspicious days. I highly recommend experiencing this yourself.
After exploring the town, I often relax with coffee at a rooftop café in one of the two tall buildings in town, where you can enjoy a high view of Dawei and the laid-back atmosphere of this small town.
Summary of Impressions and Invitation
Dawei Burmese girls are not only beautiful but also reflect the unique culture and lifestyle of Tanintharyi Region. For me, mr.hotsia, meeting and talking with Dawei girls opened my perspective and deepened my understanding of the connection between Thailand and Myanmar.
