Made-to-order food in Dawei: Local flavors that mr.hotsia must share
When talking aboutDawei cityin Tanintharyi Region, Tanintharyi Province, Myanmar side, many might think of beautiful seas, the Great Buddha Temple, or the history linking to Thailand. But for me, mr.hotsia, what impresses me equally isthe made-to-order food and street food herefull of charm and flavors clearly different from elsewhere
Dawei is a small town very close to the Thai border, just a few hours' drive from Kanchanaburi. Yet here, the food scene blends Burmese and Southern Thai cultures in an interesting way because many Dawei people speak Thai and have close ties with Southern Thais working in Thailand.Read the story of traveling Dawei by yourselfto get a clearer picture
Morning with Mataba and Burmese coffee
On the first day when mr.hotsia got off the bus, I walked around the market in Dawei and was attracted by a roti shop selling alongside Burmese coffee. These shops make Mataba, a roti-like dough baked on a hot clay pot until puffed, then eaten with a mild, not too spicy curry sauce. It's a simple and very delicious breakfast. I tried dipping Mataba in the curry and found it surprisingly perfect.
The Burmese coffee here is also unique. They add sweetened condensed milk, strong coffee, and a white powder of uncertain origin that adds fragrance and richness. I enjoyed sipping hot coffee with crispy Mataba on my first morning in Dawei. I also saw fried rice shops that made great fried eggs, another breakfast option not to be missed.
Lunch with challenging seafood
For lunch, mr.hotsia intended to try fresh seafood in Dawei, known to be much cheaper than on the Thai side. I went to a roadside made-to-order restaurant that seemed to be a gathering spot for locals and tourists. However, I faced an unexpected communication barrier.
Although the staff could speak some Thai, sometimes communication errors led to getting stir-fried shrimp instead of the grilled shrimp I ordered. I understood their intention was to provide the best service, but it meant I didn’t get the expected taste. Nevertheless, prices here are much cheaper than at home. If you find a place you like, it will definitely be a worthwhile lunch.

Dinner with Burmese noodles and refreshing smoothies
On the first night in Dawei, I had the chance to stroll around a temple fair in town and found made-to-order food called Burmese noodles. The noodles were chewy and soft, the broth rich, truly a simple and filling street food. I ate while filming clips, capturing the warm atmosphere of a community still living simply.
Another day, I chose to have a cold fruit smoothie instead of dinner because I wanted to lose weight and change the eating atmosphere. The smoothies here are made from real fresh fruit, with just the right sweetness, helping to cool down in the hot city weather very well.
Great view restaurant, don’t miss the rooftop in the shopping mall
If you want a dining experience with a beautiful view in Dawei, I, mr.hotsia, recommend going up to the rooftop of the largest shopping mall in town. The lower floors are retail shops, and the top floor is a café and smoothie bar. Here you get a 360-degree view of Dawei city, colorful tall buildings, and main roads.
I like to go here in the evening before sunset to see the golden light shining through the city and turning into city lights at night. This chill atmosphere is rare in a small town like Dawei. The shop is not far from Garden Hotel, just walk out of the hotel and turn left at the street corner to find it.
