Cuisine of Tanintharyi Region: Flavors and Lifestyles in Dawei City

When talking about the Tanintharyi region in Myanmar, many might think of the natural beauty and the coastline. But for me, mr.hotsia, what caught my attention and I especially want to share isFood in Dawei CityA small town that secretly holds deep charm in its flavors and cultural way of life

Local Breakfast: Roti Mataba and Burmese Coffee

If you plan to wake up early in Dawei, I recommend trying to tasteMatabaA unique roti dough because here they press the dough onto a hot clay pot to puff it up, then dip it in a mild curry sauce fragrant with authentic Burmese spices. Another special thing is that these mataba shops usually sell alongside Burmese coffee, which blends milk, coffee, and a mysterious white powder that softens the flavor. This coffee is one of my favorites, mr.hotsia, because it feels like drinking coffee at a Burmese friend's home.

Besides roti mataba, I also triedLocal-style fried riceserved with crispy fried eggs, a simple dish but with extraordinary taste. The restaurant I visited paid great attention to the details of the fried rice and fried eggs. It was so delicious that I had to go back several times.

Lunch with seafood in Dawei: A story of communication and flavor

For lunch, I intended to tryDawei seafoodwhich is famous for being cheaper and fresher than in Thailand. However, I faced challenges communicating with the vendors. Staff who spoke Thai were happy to help, but sometimes we still didn’t fully understand each other, causing me to order grilled shrimp but receive stir-fried shrimp instead. Nevertheless, the seafood taste was quite good, and the prices were noticeably cheaper than back home.

If any mr.hotsia readers have favorite seafood restaurants in Dawei to recommend, please let me know so I can revisit and enjoy them more next time.

Dinner with Burmese noodles and refreshing smoothies

On my first night in Dawei, I happened upon a small local festival where a Burmese noodle stall was selling food. I ate while filming clips. The atmosphere was lively and warm. The noodles had a rich flavor, and the seasonings clearly reflected the lifestyle of the people of Dawei.

On the second day, I chose to lighten my meal by drinking fresh fruit smoothies commonly sold around Dawei. These smoothies were very refreshing, helped cool down the heat, and were a good choice for those wanting to stay healthy while traveling.

Walking through the narrow alleys of Dawei, you will see many local food stalls worth trying, which are great options for meals in this town.

Restaurants with great views: Scenic spots and atmospheres you must experience

If you want a comfortable place to sit with beautiful views, I, mr.hotsia, recommendthe largest shopping mall in Daweiwhich is located next to the Garden Hotel. The rooftop of this mall has been converted into a popular spot selling smoothies, coffee, and cakes.

The highlight of this place is the nearly panoramic view of Dawei city, especially in the evening before sunset, when the atmosphere is romantic and stunning. I recommend going up to sit, enjoy a coffee or a cold drink, and experience the peace and another side of Dawei.

Prices here are very reasonable compared to the atmosphere and view offered. It’s another experience not to be missed for visitors to the Tanintharyi region.

Connecting travel and lifestyle in the Tanintharyi region

From my experience, mr.hotsia, traveling to Dawei in the Tanintharyi region, which is not far from the Thai border at Kanchanaburi province—only about 4 hours away—the atmosphere here is filled with the friendliness of locals who speak a lot of Thai. Most young people here have worked in Thailand, especially in the south, in rubber tapping and fishing.

Therefore, traveling to Dawei is not too difficult, and communication with locals is smooth. Renting a motorcycle with a driver to explore places like Dawei beach and the famous Big Buddha temple, including the Shinpin Pagoda known for the legend of light shining from its top on special days, is recommended.

Closing remarks from mr.hotsia

Although the cuisine of the Tanintharyi region is not heavily promoted like other tourist cities, for me, mr.hotsia, tasting roti mataba, Burmese coffee, fried rice with fried eggs, and fresh seafood in Dawei is a charm worth experiencing firsthand.

Traveling here not only fills your stomach but also lets you experience the friendly local lifestyle and deeply blended culture. For those who enjoy in-depth travel and want to discover the true essence of Dawei, I, mr.hotsia, definitely recommend keeping the Tanintharyi region on your list.
