Travel Dawei City Tanintharyi by Yourself with mr.hotsia
When talking about Dawei, many might not immediately think of what is interesting here, but for me, mr.hotsia, Dawei in Tanintharyi, Myanmar, is another destination worth visiting at least once. This place offers not only peace and authentic Burmese lifestyle but also charm in many dimensions including culture, food, and nature blending subtly with Thai influences.
Dawei is located in Tanintharyi, a province bordering Thailand’s Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, and Ranong provinces. I traveled here via Mae Sot and Mawlamyine, taking about ten hours by car. The road is rough due to ongoing repairs but offers new experiences you won’t find elsewhere. For those with a bigger budget, flying directly from Yangon is much more convenient.
Language and People – The Thai Spirit Hidden in Dawei
What impressed me from the first step in Dawei was the friendliness of the locals and their ability to speak Thai fluently despite being in Myanmar. Many young people here have worked in southern Thailand in rubber tapping and fishing, so you’ll find almost every transport or shop staff can speak Thai well. Traveling and sightseeing here is easier than you might think.
Dawei itself is a small town you can explore in a few hours on foot. The Dawei River flows through the town center. The morning market is one of my favorite spots, especially the fish market with fresh seafood from the sea, rivaling the fish markets in Vietnam’s Cat Ba Island. If interested, take your time to explore as the market is very lively.
Dawei and Motorcycle Rental Trips – Chill Travel to the Beach
I recommend renting a motorcycle with a driver to explore around Dawei and its beaches. Although the town is small, there are several beautiful beaches to choose from. The driver helps you experience the relaxed Burmese seaside atmosphere, quite different from Thai beaches. The tranquility and natural beauty remain intact.
In Dawei, there is a big Buddha temple, known locally as “Shinpin Kayu Pagoda,” believed to have a shining light on its top on special days of the year. I was lucky to visit during the Thadingyut Festival, seeing locals lighting candles in front of their homes throughout the town. The candlelight was beautifully long and I also joined the Burmese-style Loy Krathong at 4 a.m., watching traditional dances by the Dawei River—an unforgettable experience.
Dawei Food – Flavors Beyond Description
Food is another charm of Dawei I don’t want you to miss, especially the breakfast favorite, roti mataba. Unlike regular roti, they press the dough onto a hot pot to puff and crisp it before dipping it into rich curry. I also visited a popular local restaurant regularly with dishes like fried rice, noodles, and Burmese coffee with milk and white powder, creating a smooth taste that surprisingly pairs well with mataba.
For lunch, I tried seafood here. Communication was a bit challenging but prices were much cheaper than at home, especially large grilled prawns costing about 300 baht per kilo, which is very reasonable. Still, I had to search for the right restaurant. Interested readers can follow along.Dawei SeafoodDetailed in my writing
On my first dinner, I joined a temple fair at the big temple, enjoying Burmese-style khanom jeen noodles in a local atmosphere, finishing with a refreshing smoothie that helped cool down and refresh the body.
Accommodation and Atmosphere in Dawei
Dawei doesn’t have many hotels, but the ones I stayed at and recommend areGarden HotelorGarden GuesthouseBoth located in the town center, within walking distance to the big Buddha temple and morning market, and next to a 4-story shopping mall with a coffee shop on the top floor offering beautiful city views and Wi-Fi. Rooms include air-conditioned ones at 1,000 baht and fan rooms at 450 baht, mostly with private bathrooms.
Dawei is a town without many tall buildings. Most houses retain their traditional old style, similar to Luang Prabang in Laos. The town is peaceful, ideal for those seeking real relaxation.
Travel and Tips from mr.hotsia
For travelers wanting to visit Dawei, the Kanchanaburi border is now open for tourists with Myanmar visas or passports. I personally chose to enter via Mae Sot and Mawlamyine as it’s more convenient and familiar, plus you get to experience different nature along the way compared to the main road.
I recommend traveling during the day because the roads are still rough and under construction in some parts. Flying from Yangon is a good option if you want to save time and avoid fatigue.
Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions from Dawei
Many may see Dawei as a small town with nothing special, but for me, mr.hotsia, it’s full of warmth from the people, simple lifestyles, and untouched natural beauty. I was impressed by the Thadingyut Festival with candlelight and traditional music filling the town, and truly experienced the authentic Burmese way of life.
