Eating Thai Food in Dawei: Familiar Flavors in Tanintharyi Region

I, mr.hotsia, once traveled to Dawei, a small town in the Tanintharyi Region located in southern Myanmar near the Thai border. I must say the food there has a Thai charm that made me, a Thai, feel familiar and impressed. Dawei is not just a transit town but a place full of flavors and food culture blending perfectly.

Dawei is only four hours away from the border checkpoint in Kanchanaburi Province. Because of this proximity, many locals in Dawei speak a mix of Thai. When I arrived at the bus station, I even met people who could speak Thai. This made ordering food and chatting with shop owners not too difficult. However, communication sometimes requires patience because some food terms may differ.

Breakfast in Dawei: Mataba, Roti, and Burmese Coffee

If you visit Dawei in the morning, I recommend trying "Mataba," a type of dough similar to roti but cooked by sticking the dough onto a hot clay pot until it puffs up. Then it’s dipped in rich curry sauce. Mataba here is not like the crispy roti we know but soft with a fresh dough aroma. I found many Mataba shops, usually sold with Burmese coffee that contains milk and a white powder, offering a sweet and creamy taste that’s quite unique.

Besides Mataba, there is also excellent fried rice. I found a place that made fried rice with a fried egg so delicious I had to order more. If you like a hearty, flavorful breakfast in one dish, you must try it here. Lunch and Seafood in Dawei: A Beginner's Challenge

One day I planned to try fresh seafood in Dawei because I heard it was much cheaper than in Thailand. But when I got to the seafood restaurant, I faced communication problems. As I mentioned, locals who speak Thai try their best to understand us, but some words still get mixed up. I ordered grilled shrimp but got stir-fried shrimp instead. It was a funny and challenging experience, but the seafood tasted okay. Though not perfect, I could sense the freshness and difference from Thai seafood.

Dinner at a Local Festival and Burmese Noodles

The dinner atmosphere in Dawei is equally charming. I was lucky to attend a local festival where a Burmese noodle stall was open. The noodle soup here tastes a bit different from ours, with a rich broth and unique ingredients. I ate while filming the atmosphere, experiencing the true lifestyle of Dawei people.

The next day, I chose to drink fresh fruit smoothies instead of a heavy meal because I wanted to lose weight. I must say the smoothies here are truly fresh and taste great, perfect for Dawei’s hot weather.

Must-Visit Scenic Restaurants in Dawei

If you want to dine while enjoying the view of Dawei, I recommend the rooftop restaurant of the largest shopping mall in Dawei. This restaurant is next to the Garden Hotel. They offer a variety of smoothies, coffee, and cakes. I like to sit there in the evening to watch the sunset and enjoy the beautiful city view.

The nighttime atmosphere here is beautiful and lively, perfect for tourists wanting to relax after a tiring day of sightseeing. The food is reasonably priced, and the service is excellent. It’s a resting spot I really liked.Traveling Dawei, Tanintharyi Region on Your OwnIt will be more complete if you stop by here.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions of Thai Food in Dawei

This trip to Dawei made me deeply feel the close cultural connection between Thailand and Myanmar through food. The food here is diverse, both local dishes and those adapted to Thai tastes, such as Mataba, roti, Burmese coffee, and fried rice with fried egg that feels like home.

Although communication can sometimes be challenging, the effort of Dawei people to welcome Thai tourists made me feel warm and eager to visit many more times. If you are looking for a food experience that is different yet familiar, try visiting Dawei and tasting Thai food in Dawei. I, mr.hotsia, guarantee you won’t be disappointed.
