Dawei, Tanintharyi Region - A small seaside town closer to Thailand than you think
I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Dawei, a small town in Myanmar's Tanintharyi Region that many may not know well. I can say that traveling here is not difficult and you get to experience the authentic Burmese atmosphere impressively. Dawei is located not far from the Thai border, about 4 hours from Kanchanaburi Province, making it feel like escaping the hustle of big cities while still close to Southern Thai lifestyle. Many people here speak Thai because many young Dawei people work in Thailand in rubber tapping or fishing, which makes traveling and communicating here much easier.
Dawei is a small town where houses still keep the old Burmese style mixed with a few tall buildings. One shopping mall I like has a rooftop café where you can sit and enjoy coffee or cold drinks while taking in panoramic views of the town. It’s relaxing and helps understand Dawei life better. I recommend renting a motorcycle with a driver here because traveling by yourself in a small town like this is more convenient and safer, especially if you want to visit Dawei’s beaches, which are a must-see highlight.
Dawei Sea and Coastal Lifestyle
The Dawei sea left a strong impression on me. Although it’s not a beach full of luxury resorts or as developed as popular Thai beaches, the atmosphere here is peaceful, shady, and gives a true Burmese seaside feeling. I took a motorcycle to a beach not far from town, walked along the shore enjoying the sea breeze, watched small fishing boats floating on the water, and closely observed the fishing lifestyle of the Dawei people.
Besides the sea, my visit coincided with the end of Buddhist Lent festival, when locals light candles in front of every house in town, making Dawei’s night beautiful and warm. I joined a temple fair at the Shwe Yin Myaw Pagoda, known locally in Burmese as the Shin Pin Kyaw Pagoda. This pagoda has a legend that on special days, light shines from its top, a deeply impressive and spiritual sight. I also watched traditional Burmese dance on a stage by the Dawei River during the Loy Krathong festival held at 4 a.m. the next day, a unique and memorable experience.
Food in Dawei — Simple Flavors You Must Try
Food is another aspect that makes Dawei uniquely charming. For breakfast, locals enjoy “Mataba,” a type of roti bread baked on a hot clay pot until puffed, then dipped in rich curry sauce. It’s simple but very flavorful. Dawei people also like Burmese-style coffee with milk and white powder, giving a smooth taste. I found a place serving delicious fried rice with a fried egg, perfect energy for a day of exploring.
For lunch, I planned to try fresh seafood in Dawei because I heard it’s much cheaper than in Thailand. However, it was a trial and error experience due to some communication barriers, even though some people spoke Thai. I ordered grilled shrimp but got stir-fried shrimp instead. Still, it was a fun lesson in traveling. For those interested in Dawei seafood, more details can be found atDawei Seafoodwhich I have compiled.
For dinner, I went to a temple fair at the main temple and saw Burmese-style noodles being sold, so I tried some and recorded the atmosphere. It was a lovely experience giving a real sense of Dawei life. Also, Dawei has many casual eateries and food markets where locals comfortably eat. I recommend visiting the morning marketDawei Fish Marketand the vegetable marketDawei Vegetable Marketfull of fresh ingredients and vibrant local colors.
Strolling Around the Town and Experiencing Real Life
Dawei is easy to explore on foot because it’s not very big, with old houses and only a few tall buildings, creating a warm and quiet atmosphere. I recommend walking around to see the main temple and various pagodas, which are the spiritual centers of Dawei people, and also sitting at the rooftop café of the shopping mall to enjoy the city view from above.
Visiting Dawei showed me the close relationship between Dawei people and Thailand, both in language and lifestyle similarities. If anyone wants to experience a peaceful Burmese town that still preserves traditional ways of life, Dawei is the answer. I, mr.hotsia, strongly recommend: “You must go!”
