Dewei Amazing Roti, the unique roti of Dawei that you must try when visiting

Speaking of Dawei, a city located in the Tanintharyi region of Myanmar, my overall impression as mr.hotsia is simplicity that hides many fascinating things, especially the food which is clearly different from what I have experienced before. One thing I was impressed with and want to share especially is “Dewei Amazing Roti,” the unique roti of Dawei.

The roti here is not the ordinary roti we are familiar with in Thailand. In Dawei, they have mataba, a roti dough that is pressed against a hot clay pot until it puffs up impressively. Then it is dipped into a rich curry sauce. When I, mr.hotsia, tried it for the first time, I was surprised by the incredible harmony of flavors: thin and crispy on the outside, soft inside, with a curry sauce that is rich but not too spicy, making it a truly energizing breakfast.

In Dawei, I found many roti shops that usually sell together with delicious Burmese coffee. Interestingly, the coffee here is made with milk and a special white powder, giving it a fragrant, creamy, and pleasantly sweet taste. It’s a perfect pairing for breakfast. Besides roti and coffee, I also triedDawei fried ricemade perfectly with a fried egg. This is another dish that nicely complements the variety of breakfast foods here.

Travel and Atmosphere of Dawei

If you want to experience the atmosphere like I, mr.hotsia, did, traveling to Dawei is not difficult. The city is only about 4 hours from the Kanchanaburi border checkpoint. Since most Dawei people speak Thai well, due to many young people working in Thailand, communication is not a barrier for Thai tourists like us.

Upon arrival in Dawei, I recommend renting a motorcycle with a local driver to tour the city and visit important sites such as the beautiful Dawei beach or the giant Buddha temple called “Shin Pin Khayu Pagoda,” where it is believed that on auspicious days, light shines from the pagoda’s top—a very impressive sight.

In the city itself, there are only a few tall buildings. One of them is a shopping mall where I, mr.hotsia, like to go up to the rooftop to sip coffee or smoothies while enjoying a panoramic view of Dawei. Especially in the evening before sunset, this spot is very romantic, perfect for photography and relaxing after a tiring day of sightseeing.

Dewei Amazing Roti with Breakfast and Market Atmosphere

If anyone is captivated by this unique roti, don’t miss visiting the lively Dawei market in the morning. The fresh vegetable and fruit market, along with local snacks, offers a wide variety to taste. I have written in an articleDawei Vegetable Marketthat this market is the best place to truly experience the lifestyle of Dawei people.

In this market, there are roti and mataba shops selling together with traditional Burmese coffee. After trying, I must say the taste exceeded expectations: freshly made roti with a crispy outside and soft inside, and a rich curry sauce unlike any other. Some shops use traditional charcoal stoves, filling the area with a wonderful aroma.

For those who want to know more deeply about local food in the Tanintharyi region, I recommend the articleTanintharyi Region Cuisinewhich I wrote earlier. It will help you understand Dawei’s food culture better and make your trip more delicious and enjoyable.

Seafood and Lunch in Dawei

Although I, mr.hotsia, was impressed with the roti breakfast, for lunch I tried seafood in Dawei, which is much cheaper than in Thailand. However, communication with restaurants was not always easy. Even though some people spoke Thai, there were occasional misunderstandings in ordering, such as when I ordered grilled shrimp but received stir-fried shrimp instead.

Still, for those interested in seafood and wanting to try a full set, I, mr.hotsia, recommend exploringDawei Seafoodat various restaurants, including the Dawei fish market I visited to taste fresh seafood that remains fresh and affordable.

Dinner and Nightlife Atmosphere in Dawei

After enjoying lunch, I had the chance to attend a local temple fair with an authentic village atmosphere. There, I tried Burmese-style noodles, another experience that brought me closer to the real lifestyle of Dawei people.

The next day, I chose to drink smoothies to help with dieting and recommend that if anyone wants simple local-style food, walking around the not-too-large Dawei city is enough to satisfy your hunger well.

And if you want a chill spot to watch the Dawei city view in the evening, I, mr.hotsia, recommend the largest shopping mall in town. Its rooftop is a café and smoothie bar, offering a great viewpoint to see almost the entire city. It’s best to go in the evening before sunset to enjoy both the beautiful view and relaxing atmosphere.
