After returning from the beach, I saw local villagers lighting a fire to cook. I approached to greet them and arranged to have a meal at their home the next day. I planned to buy ingredients and learn to cook here. While talking with the villagers, I called a friend who speaks Burmese to translate for me. Finally, I was able to join the kitchen and learn their way of life by the Bay of Bengal. I woke up early, went to the morning market, and bought salted fish to cook like this family.
Looking back 30 to 40 years, the atmosphere in Thailand must have been similar: scraping coconuts, peeling coconuts, building fires, grilling fish—all creating an amazing ambiance. The Burmese people are very kind and would not accept money for food or other help. I had to insist that it was a token of appreciation and put the money directly into their hands before they accepted it.
