Myawaddy and Mae Sot are separated by the Moei River. Nowadays, the Myawaddy - Mae Sot border checkpoint is an international crossing. People with passports and Myanmar visas can enter by land and travel to other cities. They can fly out or leave by land as well. In the past, there was news of a market bombing in Myawaddy, but that was back in 2010, many years ago. Today, Myanmar is open for tourism. It is a safe city and a gateway to continue traveling to Pa-O, the capital of Kayin State.

You can continue traveling to Mon State or Yangon. The journey from Myawaddy to Pa-O takes about 4 hours. Traveling from the Mae Sot checkpoint, which is opposite Myawaddy City, Kayin State, Myanmar, you can take a bus from Myawaddy to Pa-O. According to the latest information I have, you can contact buses to Pa-O at the checkpoint on the Myanmar side of Myawaddy. There are many buses parked there. I have not found a bus terminal inside Myawaddy city or near the market yet, but I expect one will open in the future. For mr.hotsia

For my next trip, I will either enter or exit via the Mae Sot-Myawaddy checkpoint. There isn't much to see in Myawaddy city. The Myawaddy market is interesting. I recommend that after crossing the checkpoint, just walk around. You will pass a pagoda on the right, then continue a bit further to reach the market on the right as well. The Myawaddy market is colorful with plenty of fish. I only saw two tourist spots, but for mr.hotsia, just experiencing the lifestyle of the Burmese and Kayin people is enough.

I sat drinking Burmese-style coffee watching Myawaddy locals go about their lives. To explore Myawaddy city after crossing from Mae Sot, I used a motorcycle taxi. The motorcycle taxi queue is at the checkpoint. The fare between tourist spots is 15 baht, but actually walking is more convenient. In Mae Sot city, at J2 Hotel, you can arrange for a guide. They charge 1500 baht per day, which is worth it if you are in a group. Try contacting the hotel. When I visited Mae Sot, I stayed at J2 Hotel.

(J2 Hotel) I found it new and clean. In Myawaddy city, there are accommodations, Thai restaurants, and internet access. However, most tourists prefer to stay on the Thai side for convenience. But if you want to stay in Myawaddy city, about 200 meters from the checkpoint on the right, there is a fairly good hotel. Mr.hotsia has never stayed there but passed by and took photos to share. I recommend staying in Thailand for convenience unless you arrive at the checkpoint late at night and cross immediately. Mr.hotsia, November 4, 2013, recommends J2 Hotel on the Thai side.
