Chiang Khan Mekong River Prawns Chiang Khan
Mekong River Prawns Chiang Khan http://www.hotsia.com > Chiang Khan > Mekong River Prawns Chiang Khan While I was strolling in Chiang Khan, local villagers were grilling large prawns on sticks to sell. These prawns are bigger than small shrimp. Curious, I learned they are Mekong River prawns. They say these prawns are delicious when grilled or steamed. On my way back from visiting Chanakham town, I saw villagers retrieving prawn traps, so I stopped to ask and share this with you.

When eating prawns in Chiang Khan, you can imagine the scene. The Mekong River prawns like those in the picture can sometimes grow as big as an arm. But when caught with traps, they are smaller like those shown. The traps use rice bran as bait to lure prawns in. They set the traps in the evening and retrieve them in the morning. They collect about a kilogram to sell to locals in Chiang Khan, who then grill or steam them to sell to tourists. The selling price is about 100 baht per kilogram. I saw how villagers patiently trap and gather until they reach a kilogram.
I really want to go back and buy grilled prawns. I didn’t realize it was so hard to catch them. The grilled price is not expensive at all. If any friends go to Chiang Khan, please try and tell me if they are delicious. As for Mr.Hotsia, I admit I haven’t tasted them yet. 17 53 55.577 N, 101 39 47.772 E GPS coordinates (POI) of a Mekong River prawn hunter retrieving traps in Chiang Khan. 17 53 55.667 N, 101 39 47.957 E The prawns are not large here, but the species can grow much bigger before becoming the grilled prawns of Chiang Khan.
