This was my first time traveling to Chiang Khan. It made me see the similarities between Chiang Khan and Hoi An. Chiang Khan is an old town by the Mekong River, an old market with many ancient houses. Hoi An is also an ancient market town.
However, Hoi An was a trading market for various countries like China, Japan, Vietnam, and Westerners, while Hoi An is a market for Thai, Lao, and nearby people. In terms of old houses and streets lined with old houses on both sides, it is somewhat like parts of Hoi An. The old houses that were once inhabited when the town expanded along the roads were left untouched, so there are not many concrete houses intruding. When people seek old houses and beautiful photo spots, Chiang Khan immediately became a popular tourist destination.
The day I went was a regular weekday, not a long holiday. Accommodation was 500 baht per night. Tour companies dropped off people to walk around. There were some foreign tourists but not many. Houses along the road focused on selling souvenirs and finding beautiful spots for tourists to take photos. There are really many photo spots. The difference between Hoi An and Chiang Khan, aside from Hoi An being a World Heritage Site, is that Hoi An has cultural performances along the streets, with nights when the city turns off all lights and villagers perform.
But Chiang Khan does not focus on this. It has an old atmosphere without performances. Personally, I prefer some local-style activities like the walking street of Khon Kaen and Kad Kong Ta in Lampang, which I like. Vendors are not many, focusing on performances to entertain people walking around. For accommodation in Chiang Khan during long holidays, you must book in advance or it will be fully booked (see below). But if you go on a regular day, no booking is needed; you can just walk around and find a place. The average price in January 2011 is 500 baht per night. Many new accommodations are opening in Chiang Khan because it is booming. I saw construction everywhere in Chiang Khan.
Regarding food, Chiang Khan has famous restaurants with views of the old town, such as Huen Luang Prabang, located where many old houses are. Other restaurants are scattered around. You won't go hungry in Chiang Khan. But if you want to eat like locals with made-to-order dishes, you have to walk to the local area near Chiang Khan fresh market. There's a stuffed fried dough stick shop.
Rice noodles with spicy sauce near the bus station. The food Mr.Hotsia recommends is grilled Mekong River prawns and pan eggs, which many restaurants serve, though not all are delicious or atmospheric. In Chiang Khan, I think many artistic or quirky people live. Some shops prohibit photography or wearing shoes inside. Some shops are open sometimes and closed other times. When taking photos or doing anything in Chiang Khan, be careful not to upset the owners. But mostly it's okay. For this trip, I made a Chiang Khan map and photos at each GPS point.

Click to read about Chanthaburi. Traveling to Chiang Khan is very easy because there is a Nakhonchai Air bus from Bangkok directly to Chiang Khan.
After getting off the bus, you can walk to the tourist area or take a tuk-tuk. Traveling to Chiang Khan is very convenient. If the Nakhonchai bus from Bangkok to Chiang Khan is full, you can take a bus to Khon Kaen first and then transfer to Chiang Khan. Have a great trip!
