Doi Inthanon

Doi Inthanon, the highest peak in Thailand accessible to everyone
When talking about Doi Inthanon, many people probably think of the highest mountain in Thailand, standing at 2,565 meters above sea level, which is twice as high as Phu Kradueng. But what I, mr.hotsia, want to say is that traveling up Doi Inthanon is not difficult or challenging as many think. Regular cars, even city cars, can comfortably reach the summit without needing expert driving skills or a 4WD vehicle. This is the charm of Doi Inthanon that many overlook because it is not only the highest peak but also an easily accessible tourist destination suitable for everyone.
Year-round coldness at Thailand's highest peak
I, mr.hotsia, have experienced it many times. The feeling of standing on the summit of Doi Inthanon is a coldness that sharply contrasts with the hot atmosphere of big cities like Bangkok. No matter how hot the summer in Thailand is, once you reach the summit of Doi Inthanon, it is cold enough to require wearing a jacket all the time. This is because the peak is covered by a cloud forest year-round, with plants, mosses, and ferns growing on large trees, making the surroundings fresh and lively as if walking in a heavenly forest.
Three must-visit places when visiting Doi Inthanon
If anyone has the chance to visit Doi Inthanon, I, mr.hotsia, recommend three main spots that everyone should experience at least once.
- Doi Inthanon Summit- The highest point in Thailand that everyone aims to reach. Besides enjoying the complex mountain views and beautiful cloud forest, there is a small Ang Ka nature trail to walk and closely observe nature.
- Phra That Naphamethinidon and Phra That Naphaphonphumisiri- Located not far from the summit, these pagodas are maintained by the Royal Thai Air Force. There is an entrance fee of 40 baht. This place is not only for worship but also features beautiful flower gardens, especially century-old roses, perfect for viewing and photography.
- Waterfalls in Doi Inthanon- There are many beautiful waterfalls to choose from, such as Mae Ya Waterfall, Sirithan Waterfall, Pa Dok Siew Waterfall, Siriphum Waterfall, and Mae Pan Waterfall. It is not necessary to visit all as it may be too tiring; choose according to your convenience.
My favorite viewpoint, mr.hotsia
On the way down from Doi Inthanon summit, there is a small viewpoint on the right side with a sign indicating a short uphill walk. I consider this the most beautiful spot on the Doi Inthanon route because it offers a grand view of complex mountains and cloud cover. It is perfect for taking high-angle photos along the winding road. However, parking there is quite difficult due to the steep slope, so I recommend using wheel chocks to prevent the car from rolling for safety.
Mae Ka Ning or Mei Khab: The ice phenomenon at Doi Inthanon
For those who love extreme cold and want to see ice decorating grass and leaves, there is no need to travel abroad. At Doi Inthanon at the end of the year, there is an ice phenomenon calledMae Ka Ning(Northeastern region),Mei Khab(Northern region), or simply frost crystals on tree tops, which is a rare sight in Thailand. If anyone wants to experience this, mr.hotsia recommends planning a trip at the end of the year; you will definitely not be disappointed.
Driving tips for beginners going up the mountain
For travelers who want to drive up Doi Inthanon themselves but have no experience driving on mountain roads, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share some small tips.
- If using a manual transmission, use low gear when going uphill to maintain torque. Do not rev too high as it may overheat the engine.
- When going downhill, use low gear to help engine braking. Avoid pressing the brakes heavily for a long time as the brakes may fail.
- If using an automatic transmission, select gear L2 when going uphill or downhill, especially on steep slopes near the summit.
- If you are not confident driving yourself, at the Doi Inthanon junction, there are shuttle services available with negotiable prices.
Traveling by bus and convenience
For those who are not comfortable driving, I, mr.hotsia, have used the regular bus service from Chiang Mai to Chom Thong, then transferred to a songthaew (shared pickup truck) to go up Doi Inthanon. It is an experience that offers a different feeling and allows you to experience local life more. It is also cost-effective and removes the worry of driving on mountain roads.
Connecting with tourism in Chiang Mai and around Doi Inthanon
Besides Doi Inthanon, Chiang Mai province has many other interesting tourist attractions, such as the Doi Tao lake ruins, which I have written about in the articleVisiting the Doi Tao Lake Ruinswhich is not far from Doi Inthanon. Or if you want to experience the lifestyle and beauty of ancient temples in Chiang Mai, I recommend stopping byVisiting Saen Thong Omkoi Templewhich has deep history and culture.
Relax and savor Northern cuisine after the Doi Inthanon trip
After fully exploring Doi Inthanon, I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping to rest and recharge in Mae Chaem, a small district behind Doi Inthanon, which has famous restaurants such asJaeng Muang Restaurantoffering delicious Khao Soi and aromatic coffee where you can sit and plan your next trip. Or if you want to try other local dishes, Chiang Mai has many great restaurants to discover, such as Hia S. Roasted Duck or Korean BBQ buffet at Central Festival Chiang Mai, which I have visited and recorded on YouTube.
