Sacred Spring of Wat Phut Oen, Chiang Mai: Serenity Like a Legendary Land

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I want to invite everyone to experience a unique atmosphere atWat Phut Oenor as locals simply call it “Wat Phut Oen,” located in Chang Kheng Subdistrict, Mae Chaem District, Chiang Mai Province. This temple is not only known for its tranquility and surrounding nature but also forthe sacred springwhich is a highlight and has been spoken of for many generations.

Getting to Wat Phut Oen is not difficult. I asked the locals there, and everyone knows it well. If you have ever passed through Mae Chaem District, you surely have heard of this temple. Driving from Chiang Mai city to Mae Chaem takes about 3-4 hours, passing through mountains and fresh natural scenery. Along the way, you can see the simple and friendly lifestyle of the villagers.

History and Legend of the Sacred Spring

Wat Phut Oen, formerly known as"Wat Srisutthawas Oen Mongkut"has a long history dating back to the early Rattanakosin era. What impressed me most is the middle-of-the-water ubosot calledUthok Simawhich is quite rare to see in Chiang Mai or even in Northern Thailand with such a feature.

But Wat Phut Oen has more than that. The most amazing thing isthe sacred springwhich flows continuously without stopping, no matter how dry the season is. I arrived at the temple early in the morning and saw villagers lining up for water as long as a pickup truck. The water from this spring is believed to have Buddhist powers because according to legend, during the Buddha's time, the Buddha once visited Don Sakan, located east of this temple, and spat water from his mouth into the area that became the spring today.

There is also a story of two monks, Phra Thivitwangso and Phra Chomphuvitayo, who passed through this area on a pilgrimage and cooperated with the villagers to build the temple at the spring site. This made the area sacred and respected by the people of Mae Chaem to this day.

Atmosphere and Lifestyle Around the Temple

The atmosphere around Wat Phut Oen is full of peace and simplicity. I walked around and saw villagers collecting water with various sizes of water containers and plastic bottles. They come here not only to drink or use in daily life but also believe in the auspiciousness of this water to dispel bad luck.

When I visited, it was morning with cool weather. The breeze passed through large trees around the pond where the ubosot stands. The scent of leaves and moisture from the water made me feel refreshingly indescribable. I quietly watched local children playing happily, accompanied by birdsong harmonizing into a natural melody.

Although Mae Chaem is a small town with few tourists, the charm of its lifestyle and the friendliness of the people made me feel like coming home, just like my experience inMae Chaem, the small town behind Doi Inthanonfull of warmth and local eateries like Jaeng Muang restaurant, which I often visit when going to Mae Chaem.

Continuing Travel to Mae Chaem and Nearby Attractions

If you love authentic Lanna nature and culture, I recommend spending time visiting Wat Phut Oen first, then continuing to other attractions in Mae Chaem such as Mae Chaem Walking Street. If you prefer deep mountain and nature experiences, you can continue toDoi Tao Lakewhich I have written about before. Or if you want to see beautiful temples hidden in valleys, try stopping byWat Saen Thong Omkoiwhich is also a great choice.

I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to open their hearts and visit Mae Chaem and Wat Phut Oen at least once because this place holds stories and feelings that are hard to find elsewhere. The water here is not just a sacred legend but a symbol of abundance and the community bond that has been sustainably preserved.

Additional Information and Recommendations

For those planning to visit Mae Chaem, don't forget to prepare shoes for walking on dirt and shoes for temple visits, as some paths may be dirt roads and steep. Traveling during the rainy season might be challenging but offers a full experience of lush green forests.

Mae Chaem also has many local restaurants worth trying. I recommend tasting Khao Soi and rich Northern Thai dishes that are hard to find in big cities. If you have the chance, don't miss visiting Mae Chaem morning market, where you can see fresh produce from gardens and mountains, as well as local dried goods that make excellent souvenirs.

If you like peace and nature not far from Chiang Mai, Mae Chaem and Wat Phut Oen are the answers I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend.
