Mon Jam: A Heaven of Mountains and Mist in Chiang Mai
When talking about Chiang Mai in the late rainy to early cold season, many people think of tourist spots filled with cool atmosphere and breathtaking mountain views. In 2011, I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to travel north from Bang Bo amidst floods that caused chaos in life, to experience a new place gaining popularity among tourists, which isMon Jama tourist destination in Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province, which I can honestly say will not disappoint.
Mon Jam is located on a ridge at about 1,350 meters above sea level, with cool weather all year round, similar to Phu Thap Boek that I have experienced in northern Thailand. The highlight of Mon Jam is the panoramic view where you can see both sunrise and sunset in the same place, a rare phenomenon to witness in one location.
Travel Tips: Get Ready Before Heading to Mon Jam
For traveling to Mon Jam, I recommend taking the route from Chiang Mai city to Mae Rim, then turning left onto the Samoeng route for about 14 kilometers. Then you will find a right turn leading up to Mon Jam for another 5 kilometers. What you need to prepare is fuel because gas prices on the mountain peak are higher than usual. The last gas station before the climb is near Pong Yaeng, so fill your tank before heading up.
And don’t get confused betweenMon JamandMae JamAlthough the names sound similar, Mae Jam is a district located behind Doi Inthanon, while Mon Jam is a Royal Project in Mae Rim District, which I will describe in this article.
Atmosphere and Activities at Mon Jam
Mon Jam is not just an ordinary viewpoint but also an important cool-climate vegetable growing area for the local Hmong people. For example, the lettuce fields where you can see fresh green vegetable plots contrasting with the blue sky, and the famous strawberry farms that are sweet and juicy during the winter season. I personally walked through these vegetable plots amidst the cool air that made me feel refreshingly indescribable.
At Mon Jam, there are comfortable tent camping services called "Camping Resort" that combine privacy and full convenience, including private bathrooms, hot water, electricity, and amenities comparable to a hotel. But the special part is that you get to experience nature up close — just open the window to feel the cool breeze and peaceful mountain views surrounding you. At night, I sat watching the star-filled sky sparkling brightly, creating an unforgettable impression that you can’t find in big cities.
Restaurants and Chill Atmosphere at Mon Jam
One of my favorite experiences upon arriving at Mon Jam is tasting local food at small restaurants run by local villagers. These eateries focus on simplicity but deliver extraordinary flavors. I recommend coming in the afternoon because the sunlight softens and the shadows provide shade, making the atmosphere very cozy. Many visitors order beer to sip while enjoying the mountain and mist views. Some bring wine to open (there is a 100 baht corkage fee). This kind of atmosphere is rare and very impressive for a relaxing trip just 40 minutes from Chiang Mai.
Nong Hoi Royal Project and Cool Climate Agricultural Plots
Near Mon Jam is the Nong Hoi Royal Project Development Center, a research and cultivation site for various cool-climate vegetables such as artichokes, herbs like lemon balm, mint, chamomile, rosemary, as well as fruits like plums, seedless grapes, and sweet strawberries. There are also hydroponic vegetable plots using soil-less growing technology, such as red oak leaf lettuce and various salad greens, which is interesting for those who want to learn or experience systematic cool-climate agriculture.
Connecting to Other Travel Destinations in Chiang Mai
If you enjoy traveling around Chiang Mai and nearby areas, I, mr.hotsia, recommend combining this trip with visits to other nearby places such asthe Doi Tao Lake Ruinswhich has interesting history and nature, or if you have more time, try visitingSaen Thong Amkoi Templean important temple for northern people, or take a stroll on the Ob Luang Bridge atOb Luangfor a unique atmosphere.
Summary of Impressions from mr.hotsia
Mon Jam is one of the destinations I, mr.hotsia, am most impressed with in Chiang Mai. Besides the beautiful views and cool weather, there is the warm and natural lifestyle of the Hmong people, as well as the Royal Project promoting sustainable agriculture. I believe anyone who visits will gain peace, memorable experiences, and a true feeling of closeness to nature.
For those planning to visit Chiang Mai in the winter season, don’t forget to make "Mon Jam" one of your must-visit places. I guarantee you will fall in love with it just like I did.
