Mae Ok Hu Reservoir, a refreshing cool spot in Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai
When talking about Chiang Mai, many might think of Doi Inthanon, Doi Suthep, or the Old City. But for me, mr.hotsia, Mae Chaem is another enchanting destination that remains truly natural. One place I want to share from my firsthand experience is “Mae Ok Hu Reservoir,” which some locals call “Nam Ok Ru” or “Nam Tok Ok Ru.” If you have heard of the Nam Tok Long Ru waterfall in Ubon Ratchathani, be sure to distinguish clearly that this is Mae Ok Hu in Mae Chaem, Chiang Mai. The names sound similar but the locations and atmospheres are completely different.
Traveling to Nam Ok Hu is not too difficult. Although it is deep inside Mae Chaem district, Chiang Mai province, the route is filled with mountain views and morning mist that will melt your heart. I, mr.hotsia, drove from Chiang Mai city through winding but beautiful roads, passing local coffee shops and small community markets that still preserve the true Northern lifestyle.
Stories from Nam Ok Hu: The Secret of Lemons and Chiang Dao Cave
Nam Ok Hu is a natural water source that locals use for relaxation and swimming during the summer. The cool water flows from a small, fresh stream that makes you reluctant to get out. I, mr.hotsia, heard from locals that in the past there was an experiment where lemons were poured into Chiang Dao Cave in Chiang Dao district, Chiang Mai. After several days, the lemons were carried out to Nam Ok Hu. This made the villagers confident that the water in this reservoir is deeply connected to Chiang Dao Cave.
I walked along the stream and noticed a dam built around the water outlet area to maintain cleanliness and safety. It’s no surprise why this place is suitable for safe relaxation and swimming. Nearby, there is a Mae Ok Hu guardian spirit shrine where locals come to pay respects and make wishes, reflecting the strong bond between nature and local beliefs.
Atmosphere and Lifestyle at Nam Ok Hu
Although it is not a heavily visited tourist spot, I, mr.hotsia, see the vibrant life of Mae Chaem people spending their leisure time here. Around the area, there are traces of small food and drink stalls run by community members. It’s a great rest stop for travelers passing through. The simplicity here made me truly feel like I was resting, not just sightseeing nature.
For those who enjoy swimming and refreshing cold water, Mae Ok Hu Reservoir is a perfect choice. Remember that at the water outlet point there is a dam and swimming is prohibited there. Instead, swim in the flowing stream for your safety and to preserve nature for the future.
Connecting Travel and Nearby Attractions
If you have more time in Mae Chaem, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visitingJaeng Muang Cafea popular coffee and restaurant in Mae Chaem. This place is perfect for recharging before continuing your journey and tasting authentic Northern dishes like the delicious Khao Soi, which I often enjoy when visiting Mae Chaem.
If you like Northern history and culture, I suggest traveling toSaen Thong Amkoi Templenot far from Mae Chaem. Here you will find the ancient and significant Buddha statue called Phra Chao Saen Thong, important to the locals. It’s another route that perfectly blends nature and faith.
And if you want to experience a different nature of water and mountains, I have written aboutOb Luang National Park and Walking on the Ob Luang Bridgewhich is not far from Mae Chaem. It’s another spot where you can see beautiful canyons and the Mae Chaem River flowing past steep cliffs.
Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions of Nam Ok Hu
Nam Ok Hu is not just an ordinary water source but a place that amazingly combines the depth of nature and the lifestyle of the Mae Chaem community. I, mr.hotsia, really enjoyed experiencing the cool, clear water amidst mountains and birdsong. This place is perfect for those wanting to escape the hustle of big cities and immerse themselves in pure and peaceful nature.
If you are planning a trip to Chiang Mai, I recommend adding Mae Chaem and Nam Ok Hu to your list. I guarantee you will have a unique and memorable experience comparable to other famous attractions in Chiang Mai.
