Night Walk in the Angkhang Valley with mr.hotsia
Traveling up to Doi Angkhang in Chiang Mai Province is one of my favorite experiences because the route up the mountain is especially steep and winding for over 10 kilometers. For those planning to drive up by themselves, I strongly recommend checking your vehicle's condition and having the skill to drive uphill using low gear for maximum safety. Careful driving up and down the mountain will make your journey smooth and less stressful.
When talking about Doi Angkhang, many people think of the Royal Agricultural Station and the daytime views filled with green tea plantations and cool-climate flowers. But for me, Doi Angkhang at night has a charm and atmosphere that makes the heart beat with freshness and warmth. Although it’s cold, it is full of life.
The night I stayed at Jeed Jad Hotel, a small and charming accommodation located in the heart of Angkhang town, which offers souvenir shops and rooms. Especially, they provide free WIFI until midnight. After unpacking, I invited myself to take a walk around the hotel, enjoying the lively atmosphere of the small town bustling with tourists and local villagers. It felt like a small town hidden in the valley.
What I liked most was walking in the cold breeze surrounded by limestone mountains around the Angkhang valley. I felt like I was walking in a small town in Laos. It was a feeling that combined tranquility and brightness from the neon lights of shops and small markets open in the evening.
For my dinner that night, I chose to try the famous Doi Angkhang roti, known for its crispy outside and soft inside, topped with condensed milk and palm sugar. The sweet and creamy taste was just right, paired with hot oolong tea from nearby tea plantations, making the night incredibly warm. I also stopped by a Yunnan restaurant before continuing my walk. The recommended dishes were Yunnan pork knuckle and fresh vegetables grown in the Royal Project. The flavors were rich and full of fresh local ingredients.
After a full meal, I strolled around the small market in front of the Royal Project and along the main village road, which offered snacks, handwoven clothes, and souvenirs from various hill tribes. The nighttime atmosphere here was not too quiet, filled with laughter and friendly conversations, as if everyone gathered to spend quality time on a cool night in Doi Angkhang.
If you like camping and fully experiencing nature, Doi Angkhang offers camping spots with bonfires where you and your friends can sit around, chat, listen to nature sounds, and admire the starry sky. It’s another nighttime experience I highly recommend for adventure and nature lovers.
Doi Angkhang is not only great at night. During the day, you can visit the lush green tea plantations at the Royal Agricultural Station, explore the Nor Lae village, home to the Lahu people. Here, you can see the hill tribe lifestyle that preserves traditional customs and culture. There are also cool-climate flower gardens and sustainably grown vegetable plots to enjoy.
If you have time, don’t forget to visitDoi Tao Lake Ruinswhich is not far from Chiang Mai. It’s another place I had the chance to visit and wrote about in a previous article. Or if you enjoy temple atmospheres full of history, try visitingSan Thong Amkoi Templewhich impressed me with its beauty and peaceful surroundings.
For travelers heading to Doi Angkhang, I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing well, especially for the cold weather at night. Bring warm clothes and suitable shoes for walking on paved roads and paths in this small town.
Additionally, Doi Angkhang is a starting point for trips to other attractions in Chiang Mai and nearby provinces, such asOb Luangor the route to Mae Sariang passing through Mae Chaem district, where I have written about great restaurants likeJaeng Muang Restaurantfor those who want to extend their journey to other destinations.
At night in Doi Angkhang, I felt simplicity filled with warmth from the people and local lifestyle, combined closely with nature. It’s a small happiness that’s rare nowadays. For those who love peace and want to experience the atmosphere of a quiet small mountain town, I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a night walk in the Angkhang valley at least once. I guarantee you will fall in love with it as I did.
