Kaen Chai Isan Restaurant in Chiang Mai You Must Try
Chiang Mai, although a northern city famous for its intensely flavored northern cuisine, if you are a fan of Isan food like me, mr.hotsia, I can say there is a must-try spot called “Kaen Chai.” I recently experienced it fresh and hot, and I must say the taste and atmosphere of this restaurant will not disappoint.
Kaen Chai Chiang Mai has two sibling branches. The first branch is near the canal by the waterworks, close to the Royal Agricultural Research Center. The other branch I visited is behind Wat Ched Yod on Super Highway Road, located at 54/1 Singharat Road, Mueang Chiang Mai District, phone 053 221 265. It’s very convenient for those staying in the city or wanting to stop by before heading back to their accommodation.
Atmosphere and Getting There
I, mr.hotsia, visited the Kaen Chai branch behind Wat Ched Yod in the evening. The surrounding area is a simple community zone, not as busy as typical tourist areas. There is ample parking. The restaurant is simply decorated, focusing on comfort rather than luxury, emphasizing food quality and a warm atmosphere like eating at a friend’s home.
For those who love exploring Chiang Mai like me, during your city trip while visiting temples or exploring local markets, don’t forget to stop by Kaen Chai. Besides tasting authentic Isan food, you will also experience the lifestyle of Chiang Mai people blending Isan culture just right.
Must-Try Menu at Kaen Chai
The signature dishes I highly recommend at Kaen Chai are “Moo Lod” and “Nuea Lod.” These two dishes are unique and hard to find in Chiang Mai. I previously tried Moo Lod at the canal branch, which was very delicious. This time I tried Moo Lod at the Wat Ched Yod branch. Although the taste is similar, I prefer the canal branch’s Moo Lod because the pork is tender and the herbs are more complete.
Additionally, Kaen Chai offers a variety of other dishes such as traditional spicy Som Tum with fermented crab, fully spiced pork larb, and mild-flavored beef nam tok. These are perfect for those wanting to experience authentic Isan flavors without traveling far to Isan.
A Perfect Dining Experience with Chiang Mai’s Atmosphere
What I love most is the feeling of eating Isan food in the northern city like this. It’s like a cultural journey that’s exciting and fun. Kaen Chai is not just an ordinary restaurant but a meeting point for all ages, both Chiang Mai locals who love Isan food and tourists wanting to try something new.
I, mr.hotsia, recommend that if you come to Chiang Mai and want a change from purely northern food, come to Kaen Chai. It’s also close to many important Chiang Mai attractions like Wat Ched Yod, where I have visited and taken beautiful photos. Or if you are interested in visitingDoi Tao Lake Ruinsor to pay respects atWat Saen Thong Omkoiit’s very convenient.
Eating and Travel Tips
For Isan food lovers, don’t forget to order hot Moo Lod with sticky rice and spicy Som Tum. I, mr.hotsia, especially enjoy eating it with a cold soda to cool down in the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere. If you like it really spicy, I recommend trying “Pork Larb” and “Beef Nam Tok.” You won’t be disappointed.
For getting there, I suggest using a private car or motorcycle because the restaurant is in a soi where taxis are hard to find. But if you stay near Wat Ched Yod, it’s convenient. You can also visit nearby local markets and then come for delicious Isan food afterward.
Summary of Impressions of Kaen Chai Chiang Mai
I, mr.hotsia, simply conclude that Kaen Chai Chiang Mai is another Isan restaurant you must try if you like bold, home-style flavors. It also broadens the northern food scene in Chiang Mai. This place is not just about delicious food but also about warmth and authentic Isan taste in Chiang Mai.
If you are looking for a restaurant with both great taste and atmosphere, Kaen Chai is the answer I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend.
