Mae Chaem, a small town behind Doi Inthanon not to be overlooked

If you are someone who has driven up Doi Inthanon via Chom Thong and passed the back route, Mae Chaem might be a name still unfamiliar to many because most people rush to Pai or Mae Sariang, overlooking this small town, which is a pity. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Mae Chaem several times and stayed here for three nights. Only then did I clearly feel that Mae Chaem is a fascinating and charming town, especially for those who love peace and truly enjoy nature.

Mae Chaem is surrounded by mountains, and in the winter, fog covers the valleys and rice fields. The view that impressed me the most is the viewpoint on the hill, where we can see Doi Inthanon as a backdrop, green rice fields mixed with white fog floating over the valleys. It is a rare and beautiful sight that makes you want to stop time right there.

Travel and Accommodation

For traveling to Mae Chaem, if you drive up Doi Inthanon via Chom Thong, don't forget to try the back route down the mountain, which is a shortcut to the peaceful Mae Chaem. I chose to stay atPamview Mae Chaem Hotela small hotel managed by a local teacher. What impressed me was the fast and stable internet and Wi-Fi here, even in a remote area. Plus, it has a view overlooking the vast Mae Chaem rice fields stretching as far as the eye can see.

Local Lifestyle and Simple Food

Mae Chaem is a town that still maintains an authentic local lifestyle. Most restaurants are small shops selling sticky rice with grilled chicken or pork, simple dishes but with bold flavors that are very satisfying. There are only a few made-to-order restaurants in town, and there is also a small grilled pork restaurant and a 7-Eleven. If you want to try delicious Khao Soi, I recommend going toJaeng Muang RestaurantThis is one of the few restaurants designed to accommodate tourists like us. It has comfortable seating, authentic Northern Thai menus, and is an important energy spot when visiting Mae Chaem.

Another thing I really liked was the kindness of the Mae Chaem people. I went to the morning market and bought fresh fish from the locals, then asked them to help me have the fish cooked salty style. They didn't charge me and even fried one fish for me to eat. The Mae Chaem River flows through the town, providing fresh fish to eat all the time. It opened up a simple local food experience that made me feel very warm-hearted.

Interesting Attractions and Activities

Mae Chaem is not just about rice fields and fog. There is also the Thepnom Hot Springs to relax after a long journey, and at Ban Thong Fai, you can see traditional cotton weaving preserved as a community heritage. Additionally, there are ancient temples that serve as the spiritual center of the locals, which I recommend visiting to pay respects and experience the peaceful local way of life.

Mae Chaem is also an important connecting point for traveling to Khun Yuam, Mae Sariang, or even Pai. The route through Mae Chaem is suitable for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle and truly experience nature.

Connecting with Nearby Towns and Experiences

If you enjoy traveling in the North and are interested in stories of small towns hidden in valleys, I recommend reading my articles aboutDoi Tao Lake RemainsandSaen Thong Omkoi Templewhich are two examples of discovering towns and cultures that many people may not know much about. All three places reflect another side of Chiang Mai's charm, full of nature and community lifestyle.

Summary of Experience by mr.hotsia

Mae Chaem is a town that proves beauty is not about size but about peace, beauty, and the sincerity of its people. I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying for a night or two in Mae Chaem. Don't rush like a usual trip; give this town time to tell its story to you. I believe you will return home with unique and wonderful memories.
