Before Climbing Doi Inthanon: Prepare yourself for the journey to Thailand's highest peak
When talking about climbing Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai province, I, mr.hotsia, honestly say it’s not just a simple trip but an adventure that requires good preparation from the very first step. I still vividly remember the feeling when I stood at the Chom Thong junction before heading up the mountain. This spot is like the first gateway every traveler must pass through. Besides being the route to Thailand’s highest peak, it’s also a hub of interesting lifestyles and cultures of the Chiang Mai people.
I highly recommend that before climbing Doi Inthanon, don’t rush to drive up immediately. Stop to eat something at Chom Thong junction first because once you’re up on the mountain, finding food is not easy and prices are much higher. There are several local restaurants to choose from here. I like to stroll around the small market nearby to find simple food like hot Khao Soi or freshly made Thai desserts. It’s a great way to recharge before the steep road ahead.
Regarding food, I recommend Jaeng Mueang restaurant in Mae Chaem, which is not far from Doi Inthanon.Jaeng Mueang RestaurantThis is my frequent stop when visiting Mae Chaem because they serve delicious Khao Soi and fragrant coffee, perfect for resting after a tiring drive. Mae Chaem itself is a small town behind Doi Inthanon that still preserves the peacefulness and authentic Northern lifestyle very well. It’s also a passage to Mae Khajorn, Mae Sa, and Wat Chan before heading to Pai. I believe if you visit Mae Chaem once, you will fall in love with its atmosphere just like I did.
Besides food, the fun part of the journey before reaching Doi Inthanon is experiencing nature and the local way of life along the roadside. I once stopped to visit Wat Saen Thong in Omkoi.Wat Saen Thong Omkoiwhich is also in Chiang Mai province. This temple houses Phra Chao Saen Thong, highly revered by locals. Sometimes, stopping to pay respects and make a small merit before heading to the big mountain helps calm the mind and better prepare for the cold weather at the summit.
The road up Doi Inthanon becomes increasingly steep and winding. I recommend checking your vehicle thoroughly before departure, especially brakes and tires, because some parts of the mountain road are quite challenging. If you come during winter, the weather can be very cold with thick fog at times, greatly reducing visibility. Having working headlights and driving cautiously is very important.
If you love photography, prepare your camera and batteries well because there are many beautiful viewpoints along the way up Doi Inthanon, such as Wachirathan Waterfall and Kew Mae Pan Viewpoint, which are must-visits for nature lovers. I once hiked up to Kew Mae Pan and was impressed by the 360-degree mountain and sea of mist views. It truly makes you feel immersed in nature.
During my trip up Doi Inthanon, I also stopped to visit Ob Luang.Ob Luangwhich is located in Hod district, Chiang Mai province as well. This spot is a canyon with the Mae Chaem River flowing through and features a swinging rope bridge for tourists to cross. If you enjoy excitement, I assure you it’s fun and you’ll get great photos to take home.
After spending the whole day traveling and exploring around Doi Inthanon, I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to know that preparing well with food, drinks, clothing, and vehicle checks is very important. It will help make your trip smoother and safer. Whether you are a novice or experienced traveler, respecting nature and local communities around the mountain is something not to overlook.

Finally, before climbing Doi Inthanon, don’t forget to prepare your mind for rapidly changing weather and temperatures that may be low enough to require thick warm clothes. The cold at the summit will make you feel refreshed and fully enjoy the nature. Safe travels from mr.hotsia!
