Driving Up and Down Doi Inthanon with mr.hotsia: A Real Experience on Thailand's Highest Peak
When it comes to traveling in Chiang Mai for those who love road trips like me, mr.hotsia, “Doi Inthanon” is a destination you simply cannot miss. Not only is it the highest mountain in Thailand, but the drive up and down Doi Inthanon is an experience full of challenges and ever-changing beauty as you ascend the mountain.
I started from downtown Chiang Mai, driving towards Chom Thong district. This route is paved and in good condition but filled with sharp hairpin turns and steep climbs. It requires high concentration, especially if it's your first time driving up a mountain like me. However, if you drive slowly and without rushing, you'll find the surrounding scenery is a reward for those who are determined to keep going.
Along the way, you will pass some interesting small attractions such asJaeng Muang Restaurantin Mae Chaem district before heading up to Doi Inthanon. This restaurant is a frequent stop for me because not only can you recharge with delicious Khao Soi, but it’s also a good place to plan your next trip. Mae Chaem itself is a small town worth exploring, and I often recommend friends driving up the mountain to stop here before the steep climb.
As you climb higher, the air starts to cool and mist begins to mingle with the treetops. I became more cautious because some road sections are narrow with oncoming traffic, especially near the summit of Doi Inthanon where there are several viewpoints and waterfalls to stop at, such as Mae Klang Waterfall, a popular rest spot for tourists driving up the mountain.
What impressed me the most was seeing the clear changes in nature from the lower levels to the summit. Doi Inthanon is not just a tall mountain but like a natural gallery featuring pine forests, montane rainforests, and at some points, thick fog that made me feel like I was in another world.
Driving down the mountain requires just as much caution because the road has dozens of curves, some very narrow and steep. Speed must be controlled for safety, and don’t forget to stop and take photos at the viewpoints along the way because the views going down are just as beautiful as going up.
For those who want to extend their trip after descending Doi Inthanon, I recommend visitingSan Thong Amkoi Templewhich is not far from the main route. I visited this temple and was impressed by the peaceful atmosphere and the unique image of Phra Chao Saen Thong, highly revered by the people of Amkoi.
Another route I recommend for nature lovers is passing through Ob Luang in Hod district, near Doi Inthanon. Traveling through Ob Luang lets you experience the beauty of cliffs and the Mae Chaem River flowing through a narrow gorge. There is a suspension bridge you must cross, challenging your courage and offering beautiful views as a bonus. (Read more details atTraveling Ob Luang: Walking Across the Ob Luang Bridge)
My trip to Doi Inthanon was filled with the peaceful atmosphere of the forest combined with the fresh scent of nature, plus the challenge of the winding mountain roads that require focus and patience. I believe anyone who loves driving and nature will fall in love with Doi Inthanon just as I have.
If you want to see the real atmosphere, I made a videoDriving Up and Down Doi Inthanonwhich might help you visualize and feel the actual driving experience more clearly.
Finally, if you plan to travel up Doi Inthanon, don’t forget to prepare your clothing because the weather on the summit is cold and changes quickly. Also, prepare your vehicle for the winding mountain roads, and I wish everyone a safe journey. mr.hotsia
