Old Hod Town: The charm of the past still lingering in Chiang Mai

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to discoverOld Hod Townin Chiang Mai Province. Although much time has passed, this town still preserves its stories and traditional way of life in an interesting way, as if traveling back to a warm and simple past of the Northern people.

Where is Old Hod Town and why is it interesting?

Old Hod Town is located in Hod District, Chiang Mai Province. Before the construction of the Bhumibol Dam in 1964, the villagers lived peacefully along the Ping River flowing through this area. The original town area was flooded due to the dam's construction, forcing residents to relocate to a new settlement now known as "New Hod."

But what I, mr.hotsia, want to share is that although Old Hod Town was flooded and people had to move, some ruins still remain visible, especially when the water recedes, just as I had the chance to visit and see the images ofDoi Tao Lake ruinswhich was once a vast lake before gradually drying up over time.

The atmosphere of Old Hod Town through mr.hotsia's eyes

When I arrived at Old Hod Town during the low water period, I felt a peacefulness clearly different from the big cities in Chiang Mai. The atmosphere here feels like a vintage scene, with large cornfields and rice paddies covering the old town area. Most villagers have shifted to farming corn and beans instead of fishing, which was once prosperous before the flooding.

I also spoke with locals who shared stories of life in the past. Despite many changes, the people here still preserve the community's identity and local culture very well.

Exploring local lifestyle and culture

Besides experiencing simple nature, Old Hod Town has small temples and ancient sites scattered around, which I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting to learn about local history, just like when I visitedSaentong Omkoi Templein Chiang Mai Province, which holds old stories and spiritual value for the local people.

Visiting Old Hod Town is ideal for travelers who enjoy adventurous trips and learning about authentic local culture and lifestyle. I personally like wandering along small village paths to observe the warm and friendly way of life of the locals.

Recommended routes and must-do activities

For travelers who love tranquility and nature, Old Hod Town is perfect for cycling to enjoy the scenery or walking along old paths where traces of traditional houses remain. You can also stop by small community markets offering local food and souvenirs.

If you have enough time, I recommend continuing toJaeng Muang Restaurantin Mae Chaem District, not far away. This restaurant is a great spot to rest and enjoy delicious Khao Soi. It's also a favorite place of mine, mr.hotsia, when visiting Chiang Mai because the atmosphere is perfect for relaxing and planning the next trip.

Connecting to nearby attractions

From Old Hod Town, you can drive to Ob Luang, a beautiful canyon with a suspension bridge that offers an exciting crossing experience and views of the Mae Chaem River flowing past steep cliffs.Read more about Ob Luangin my article.

If you enjoy learning about history and local culture, don't forget to visit Wat Phra Borom That Doi Koeng nearby, an important religious site reflecting genuine Lanna beliefs and art.

Summary of experience from mr.hotsia

Old Hod Town is not just an ordinary tourist spot but a link between past and present. It helps us understand the lifestyle and adaptation of a community that faced major changes due to the Bhumibol Dam construction. The locals here still firmly uphold and preserve their local identity admirably.

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle to find simple peace along with the stories and lifestyle of true Northern people, Old Hod Town is the answer I, mr.hotsia, recommend without hesitation.
