Eating 2 Bowls of Dry Braised Beef Noodle at Yai Tun Noodle, Khon Kaen

When talking about Khon Kaen, the major city in the heart of Isan where I, mr.hotsia, don’t visit often, but when I do, I have to find something special to eat worthy of the title “Capital of Isan.” One of the highlights that impressed me so much I had to eat two bowls in one day is the “Dry Braised Beef Noodle at Yai Tun Noodle,” a small shop hidden in an alley in downtown Khon Kaen. The rich flavor and aroma of the braised beef broth are so intense that I just have to share this story.

I, mr.hotsia, came across this shop by chance after playing tennis at the court beside Khon Kaen Walking Street (for those interested, you can read more atPlaying Tennis in Khon Kaen: Tennis Courts in Khon Kaen Province). The fatigue from hitting balls made me very hungry, and the Yai Tun Noodle shop, packed with customers and a waiting line, was my first choice to head straight to.

The atmosphere inside the shop is simple and homey, without air conditioning, with a few wooden tables lined up. The air is filled with the fragrant aroma of broth simmered with tender beef. The flavor is rich and balanced, hard to find elsewhere. The dry noodles here are soft but not mushy, served with large pieces of tender braised beef, fragrant sweet broth, and plenty of fresh vegetables.

The first dish I ordered was the dry braised beef noodle. The noodles were cooked just right, eaten together with the juicy braised beef that almost melts in your mouth. A little bit of broth poured on top enhances the flavor perfectly. I must say this bowl reminded me of many home-cooked meals.

But the real peak was that I didn’t stop there. I ordered a second bowl, my favorite style, dry braised beef noodle with added offal like intestines and liver. The offal had no unpleasant smell at all. The aroma of spices and the perfectly simmered broth came through in every bite. This noodle experience is one I, mr.hotsia, truly give my thumbs up to.

Getting to this shop is not difficult. If you come from Khon Kaen Walking Street, the shop is not far from the main road, located in a small alley well-known to locals. After playing tennis at the courts near Khon Kaen Walking Street, I walked here. It’s a little trick I want to share for anyone who loves braised beef noodles and wants to taste authentic flavors in Khon Kaen.

Besides the outstanding taste, this shop offers a homey atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re eating your grandmother’s cooking. In a big city like Khon Kaen, which has both a walking street and many tourist spots (for those interested in strolling the walking street, try clicking onKhon Kaen Walking Street), sitting down to eat dry braised beef noodles here feels like a true rest and a genuine experience of Khon Kaen’s local lifestyle.

If you want to try other dishes, the shop also offers other beef dishes worth trying, including snacks that complement the meal perfectly. I, mr.hotsia, want to say this is a must-try once in your life braised beef noodle shop in Khon Kaen.

After enjoying the dry braised beef noodles, I still had some time to stroll and enjoy Khon Kaen’s city atmosphere. If you like nature close to the city, try visiting Ubolrat Dam, not too far away (you can read more atExciting Trip to Ubolrat Dam, Khon Kaen), another spot that added color to my visit to Khon Kaen.
