Noi Duck Larb Khon Kaen: A duck larb restaurant that mr.hotsia must visit when arriving in this city
When talking about duck larb in the Isan food scene, many might be more familiar with the names “Udon Duck Larb” or “Yaso Larb.” But for me, mr.hotsia, trying “Noi Duck Larb” in Khon Kaen is an interesting and equally unique experience. Especially if you love authentic Isan food and travel through various provinces in this region, I highly recommend this place.
The last time I strolled from Khon Kaen City Pillar Shrine towards Central (City Pillar side), I was drawn to the sign of “Noi Larb Pen” restaurant, so I stopped by to check it out. This restaurant is hidden in a small alley not far from the main road. It is an old two-story house with a high wooden floor, featuring wooden tables lined up for customers to enjoy a relaxed meal. The atmosphere is like an old home filled with the classic charm of Khon Kaen city.
Must-try dishes: Duck Larb, Spicy Duck Soup, Fried Duck, Fried Intestines, and Crispy Fried Duck Bones
This place doesn’t only serve duck larb. The must-try dishes I tasted and highly recommend ordering all include duck larb, spicy duck soup, fried duck, fried intestines, and crispy fried duck bones. Especially the crispy fried duck bones, which I liked the most. It’s a unique and delicious appetizer because the duck bones are marinated and seasoned well, fried until crispy and chewable whole. Even the large bones can be comfortably chewed. Eating it reminded me of my time as an air force soldier in Ubon, where I enjoyed grilled-fried pig heads with a slightly bitter taste similar to the crispy duck bones here. This is a great dish to pair with cold beer.
The duck larb here is different from many I have tried before because at “Noi Duck Larb,” the duck is finely chopped to the authentic larb style. The duck meat is minced finely, and the larb flavor is moderate, not too spicy, suitable for all ages. Importantly, the duck meat is tender and blends well with the seasonings. Although it’s not the ultimate for me, it’s quite tasty and a flavor I think those who don’t like very spicy food will enjoy more.
Another dish I vote for is “Lao Papaya Salad.” Khon Kaen’s version is very different from other Lao papaya salads, especially here it’s extremely spicy to the point of numbing your teeth. If you’ve never eaten authentic Isan-level spicy food, be prepared because the chili used in Khon Kaen’s Lao papaya salad is almost a handful. Even though it’s so spicy you might need to pause eating, I think Khon Kaen’s Lao papaya salad is delicious and has a unique charm. Anyone who loves spicy and tangy flavors must try it.
Stroll and eat while experiencing Khon Kaen’s way of life
After enjoying local food at Noi Duck Larb, I, mr.hotsia, also recommend taking a walk around the Khon Kaen City Pillar Shrine area. This is the city center with many interesting historical stories. For those who enjoy walking street markets, Khon Kaen has a popular walking street not less famous than anywhere else in Isan. If you want to know the evening walking street atmosphere, I have written about it in an articleKhon Kaen Walking Streetwhich will help you truly experience the local lifestyle and culture.
If you want to recharge with a Khon Kaen-style breakfast, I recommend tryingJok, Jab, Sen (rice porridge, noodle soup, and noodles)which are popular breakfast dishes among Khon Kaen locals. There are many great restaurants waiting for you to try.
A complete Khon Kaen trip: Eat, Travel, and Exercise
For those visiting Khon Kaen who want to exercise as well, I, mr.hotsia, have shared my experience playing tennis at a tennis court in Khon Kaen province. This court is located near the walking street, so after playing, you can stop by to take photos or shop along the walking street immediately. For more details, seePlaying Tennis in Khon Kaen, Tennis Courts in Khon Kaen ProvinceThank you.
Additionally, if you want to go a bit outside the city, I recommend a trip toUbolrat Damwhich is not far from Khon Kaen city. It is a beautiful natural tourist spot, perfect for relaxing and enjoying papaya salad by the dam to refresh before continuing your journey.
Summary: Noi Duck Larb, my regular spot I never miss when visiting Khon Kaen
If you visit Khon Kaen, don’t forget to stop by Noi Duck Larb. This place offers authentic Isan flavors blended harmoniously with the old house atmosphere in Khon Kaen city. Whether it’s the finely chopped duck larb, the crispy fried duck bones that you’ll crave, or the intensely spicy Lao papaya salad, along with many other recommended dishes you should try all, I guarantee you will have a deep and uniquely delicious Isan food experience.
