Phra Maha That Kaen Nakhon, a grandeur you must see with your own eyes

When talking about the symbol of Khon Kaen city that impressed me, mr.hotsia, so much that I have to share, it is “Phra Maha That Kaen Nakhon,” also known to many as Wat Nong Waeng, a royal temple located by Bueng Kaen Nakhon, Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Khon Kaen Province. I had the chance to experience the atmosphere myself and I want to say that the magnificence of this 80-meter tall stupa must be seen in person to truly understand.

I arrived at Wat Nong Waeng in the late afternoon when the sunlight was not too harsh. The surroundings are peaceful and shaded by Bueng Kaen Nakhon. The stupa stands proudly on a square base measuring 50 meters on each side. It is clearly modeled after the top of Phra That Kham Kaen but is larger and taller, built as a great auspicious monument to celebrate the 50th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s reign and the 200th anniversary of Khon Kaen city.

Phra Maha That Kaen Nakhon stands out with a blend of Dvaravati art and Indochina style, uniquely representing the authentic Isan people. As I walked around, I felt the intricate craftsmanship in the carvings on the glass walls surrounded by seven-headed Naga serpents, which are beautiful and deeply meaningful. Additionally, there are four small stupas at the corners of the base, enhancing the sacredness of this place.

A brief history that made me connect more with Wat Nong Waeng

Originally named Wat Nuea, Wat Nong Waeng was founded in 1789 by Thao Pia Mueang Paen, the first ruler of Ban Bueng Bon (now Bueng Kaen Nakhon), along with Wat Klang and Wat That. This area was the old city of Khon Kaen before the city moved to Ban Don Phan Chat in Maha Sarakham. Visiting Wat Nong Waeng is like touching the historical roots of a city full of stories and faith.

Experience walking around and the atmosphere of the temple

My tour of Phra Maha That Kaen Nakhon started with a walk around the glass wall flanked by elegant seven-headed Naga serpents. These Nagas are not just ordinary statues but a perfect blend of local beliefs and culture. I saw tourists and locals making merit continuously. Even on a weekday, the atmosphere was peaceful and full of devotion.

Inside the stupa, there is a spiral staircase that allows visitors to enjoy panoramic views of Bueng Kaen Nakhon and Khon Kaen city. From here, I could see the city stretching out to the Walking Street, a popular evening gathering spot for locals. For those who want to stroll and relax after visiting the temple, I have written aboutKhon Kaen Walking Streetwhich is a great place to walk, taste delicious food, and experience city life.

Continuing the food and travel journey with Mr.hotsia in Khon Kaen city

After exploring Wat Nong Waeng and Phra Maha That Kaen Nakhon, I, mr.hotsia, didn’t miss the chance to try the simple yet charming breakfast of Khon Kaen locals at a shop called Jok Jab Sen, which offers a small menu but full of flavor. If you visit this area and want to recharge before continuing your trip, I recommend tryingJok Jab Sen, a local Khon Kaen breakfastat the morning market near the Agricultural Products Center.

For those who enjoy exercising like me, bringing a tennis racket is perfectly fine because Khon Kaen has several tennis courts available, such as at the Walking Street, which I have mentioned in the articlePlaying Tennis in Khon Kaen: Tennis Courts in Khon Kaen ProvinceAfter exercising, you can continue strolling along the Walking Street. It’s very convenient and fun.
