Enjoy a fulfilling trip to the small town of Amnat Charoen
When talking about small provinces separated from Ubon Ratchathani like Amnat Charoen, many may not be very familiar with the name. But for me, mr.hotsia, who travels often and loves to explore local lifestyles, Amnat Charoen is a much lovelier small town than expected.
The last time I stayed overnight here for just one night, I felt the warmth of this town unlike big cities. The roads are clear, no traffic jams, people walk comfortably, recognize each other’s faces, and smile warmly while chatting casually. I remember well when I stayed at Faikid Hotel, the staff welcomed me with bright smiles and genuine warmth. Although it’s a small town, the morning and evening markets here are well-stocked with food and goods, especially the famous Amnat shallots that I had to buy to take home.
Easy travel, peace of mind
Amnat Charoen is located on the route from Ubon Ratchathani to Mukdahan, but if you take the Ubon-Yasothon route, you won’t pass here. Traveling is very easy. I once took a bus from Ubon to Amnat Charoen, and recently I drove myself from Yasothon. The roads in town and connecting to other provinces are very good. No worries about road conditions or traffic jams.
Faikid Hotel, new accommodation in the city center
For accommodation in Amnat Charoen, I recommend Faikid Hotel. It’s a new, clean hotel with affordable prices around 500 baht per night. Although it’s not located right in the city center, it’s an easy walk from downtown. I have walked from the city back to Faikid Hotel myself. There are restaurants and markets nearby, perfect for those who want to truly experience the small-town atmosphere.
Authentic Isan food at the morning and evening markets
The food in Amnat Charoen is not much different from typical Isan cuisine, but what I like is walking through the morning and evening markets to see what locals eat. Street noodle shops, pad see ew, or made-to-order dishes are all available. For tourists staying near the hotel, I recommend “Song Lab Ped” – a must-try restaurant located behind Phra Mongkhon Ming Muang, opposite the Buddha Park. For breakfast, I stopped by Benjawan’s red pork rice shop, which is delicious and has a nice atmosphere. This place is perfect for those who truly enjoy tasting local food.
Amnat Charoen Buddha Park, a central water landmark
A notable tourist spot in the town is the Buddha Park, a beautiful water landmark in the city center. I enjoy driving around to take photos of the scenic views here. It’s a great place for walking and relaxing, and also a spot where you can closely observe the local way of life.
Chanuman by the Mekong, a riverside view not to miss
If you have time, try visiting Chanuman District, a small district by the Mekong River bordering Laos. There is accommodation like Ban Rai Rim Khong Resort and a riverside atmosphere that impressed me greatly. When I visited, I recorded a video of the Mekong riverside atmosphere for you to see. If you want to experience true peace and nature by the Mekong, Chanuman is a great choice.
Lifestyle and warmth of the people
What I like most about visiting Amnat Charoen is the friendliness of the people. I remember when I walked through the evening market, the vendors playfully teased me in a fun way. This kind of atmosphere is rare in big cities. I also tried food at Chaba restaurant, a youth spot where workers stop by after work, showing another interesting side of life in Amnat Charoen.
Provincial specialty: Pure jasmine rice bran oil
Amnat Charoen is not only known for its lifestyle and nature but also for its provincial specialty: pure natural jasmine rice bran oil (EXTRA VIRGIN THAI HOMMALI RICE OIL) made from high-quality rice grains grown by local farmers. This area is one of the top jasmine rice growing regions in the country. I have tried it myself and was impressed by the quality and fragrant aroma of this oil.
Sema Phan Pi, an ancient symbol of Amnat Charoen
For history and ancient site enthusiasts, don’t miss “Sema Phan Pi” located about 10 kilometers from the city. This is a Dvaravati-era sandstone sema stone, approximately 1,000 years old, showcasing Khmer art recently discovered in 1989. It’s another tourist spot that reflects the historical background of the province well.
Connecting fun from Khon Kaen to Amnat Charoen
If you plan to travel in Isan and pass through Khon Kaen, don’t forget to stop by Amnat Charoen. The town is not far from Khon Kaen, and if you are interested in sports like me, mr.hotsia, who enjoys playing tennis, you can find time to play attennis courts in Khon Kaen provincebefore continuing your journey to Amnat Charoen. Or if you want to enjoy nearby nature, there isUbolrat Damin Khon Kaen where you can relax.
Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia
For me, Amnat Charoen is a small town full of the charm of simplicity and warmth. The people are friendly, the morning and evening markets are lively, and the food is delicious and homely. Importantly, there are natural and historical tourist attractions to explore. If you visit, don’t forget to try the duck larb at Song Lab Ped restaurant and red pork rice at Benjawan’s in town, as well as stroll through the evening market to experience the lovely small-town atmosphere.
