Sai Ua at Khon Kaen Walking Street, a flavor you must try when visiting the Isan region
When it comes to walking streets in Thailand, many people probably think of Chiang Mai first. But for me, mr.hotsia, who loves traveling and tasting delicious food at various markets and walking streets, I would sayKhon Kaen Walking Streetis one of the most interesting and charming walking streets. Khon Kaen Walking Street opened in 2010 and has become a hub of diverse local foods and products that the people of Khon Kaen proudly present. Especially the "Sai Ua" dish, which I have been searching for a long time until I found the authentic taste here.
I arrived at Khon Kaen Walking Street on a Saturday evening, which is the market's opening day. The atmosphere was lively with people strolling, browsing goods, and most importantly, the enticing aroma of spices and herbs that tempted me to find the Sai Ua stall immediately. The Sai Ua here is not just like the Northern style; it has been adjusted to suit Isan people by adding spiciness and the fresh aroma of lemongrass, turmeric, and kaffir lime leaves. This gives it a rich but not greasy flavor, making it a perfect snack to enjoy while walking and tasting.
Travel and Atmosphere at Khon Kaen Walking Street
I traveled from the tennis courts near the walking street, which are public courts I played at during this trip (read more atPlaying Tennis in Khon Kaen, Tennis Courts in Khon Kaen Province). The convenience here is excellent because after exercising, it’s just a short walk to the walking street. The walking street is located in the heart of Khon Kaen city, around Sri Chan and Khao Niao Roads. It opens every Saturday evening from about 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, perfect for tourists who want to chill after work or enjoy the weekend.
The atmosphere at Khon Kaen Walking Street is not just about food but also features traditional cultural performances and local handicrafts for sale. I saw that the people of Khon Kaen and local entrepreneurs work together to create a lively and colorful market atmosphere. I dare say Khon Kaen Walking Street is just as good as Chiang Mai’s Wualai Walking Street.
Sai Ua at the Walking Street, Nam Prik Bread, and Other Must-Try Foods
Back to the star dish, Sai Ua, I tried it fresh and hot from a stall where they carefully grilled it over charcoal. The aroma of spices soaked into the finely minced pork mixed with hot chili paste and herbs in the Isan style makes the Sai Ua perfectly spicy and flavorful. The first bite reveals a crispy outside and tender inside, different from Sai Ua I’ve had in Bangkok or the North.
There are also other local favorites I really liked, such as Nam Prik Bread, a local bread combining the crispiness of toasted bread with spicy, flavorful chili paste made from fresh chilies, garlic, and shrimp paste. Plus authentic Isan dishes like duck larb, spicy duck soup, fried intestines, and grilled sticky rice that smell wonderful. Eating while strolling the walking street, this atmosphere made me feel that my visit to Khon Kaen was worth every baht.
