Feast on 3 Kilograms of Shrimp, Shellfish, and Squid – Bringing Trat's Sea to You with a Spicy Dipping Sauce That Will Make You Say Wow
If you have been following my travels, mr.hotsia, for a long time, you probably know that I love discovering fresh seafood in every province of Thailand. This time, I want to take everyone to Trat, a coastal province often thought of only for Koh Chang, but actually offering much more. From nature and culture to, of course, a full array of fresh seafood at the Trat city market.
I arrived at the Trat market early in the morning. The atmosphere was lively with vendors bringing fresh shrimp, shellfish, crab, and fish straight from the sea to sell. I couldn’t resist buying a hefty 3 kilograms of seafood including large shrimp, sweet shellfish, fresh squid, and big sea crabs. Prices here are very reasonable compared to other provinces I’ve visited, thanks to Trat’s long coastline, clear sea, and hardworking fishermen.
The seafood dipping sauce here is truly exceptional, no exaggeration!
What makes Trat’s seafood stand out is the “dipping sauce” with its bold, authentic Trat flavor. The sauce I tasted was incredibly delicious, made from fresh bird’s eye chilies mixed with garlic and fresh lime juice. The taste is perfectly balanced with sour, spicy, salty, and sweet notes. I remember eating from morning until afternoon—grilled shrimp tender and sweet, fragrant grilled squid, and sweet shellfish with hot dipping sauce made the seafood experience in Trat absolutely perfect.
Why is Trat a must-visit for fresh seafood?
Trat is not just famous for Koh Chang; it also has many small islands and a coastline rich in natural resources like mangrove forests and coral reefs that help preserve the marine ecosystem. Moreover, the Trat city market gathers fresh seafood caught daily by local fishermen, ensuring every bite is fresh and delicious.
I recommend visiting Trat in the morning to explore the market and select your seafood, then enjoy it at nearby restaurants around the market. For those seeking more privacy, renting a room near the market is a great option. There are many guesthouses and affordable hotels where you can truly experience the coastal town atmosphere.
To fully enjoy Trat, get to know the Chong people and the fascinating nature here.
Besides Trat’s seafood, I, mr.hotsia, also want to introduce you to the Chong people, an indigenous tribe who have lived in this area for a long time. Their culture and traditions can still be seen in various villages, adding charm to the province. Nature lovers should not miss walking through the mangrove forests and the black sand beach, one of only five black sand beaches in the world, located on Langkawi Island, not far from Trat.
For in-depth travel information and stories about the lifestyle of Trat’s people, you can read more atTrat Travel Informationwhich I, mr.hotsia, have written to help you better understand this province and prepare for your journey with confidence.
If you want to extend your trip, Trat also has a border crossing to visit Cambodia.
For travelers who enjoy continuous journeys, I recommend the Ban Hat Lek permanent border crossing in Khlong Yai District, Trat Province. It provides easy access to Koh Kong Province, Cambodia. The crossing is open until 8:00 PM and features a small border market selling local products and souvenirs for tourists.
