Khlong Yai - Koh Kong Border Checkpoint: A Small Connection Point Beyond Just Travel

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to experience the permanent border checkpoint at Ban Hat Lek, Hat Lek Subdistrict, Khlong Yai District, Trat Province. This border crossing is often overlooked by many, but for me, it holds charm and interesting stories that I want to share uniquely.

Ban Hat Lek Checkpoint with Real Atmosphere from the Field

Ban Hat Lek border checkpoint is an official crossing point between Thailand and Cambodia, open from morning to evening (07:00 - 20:00) as announced by the Ministry of Interior. I have crossed this checkpoint several times, usually spending little time because the officers here are professional. However, one thing to watch out for is the 200 baht fee charged per person when entering Cambodia. Once, I negotiated it down to 100 baht by saying other checkpoints don’t charge.

My first impression upon arriving here was simplicity and less chaos compared to larger border checkpoints. There is a small border market selling general goods, especially clothes and items popular among locals. The market isn’t very big, so if you want to pick up something without needing variety, this place fits well.

From the Border Checkpoint to Koh Kong Province

If you cross Ban Hat Lek checkpoint into Cambodia, you will see a medium-sized casino on the right, which stands out and reflects the lifestyle differences between the two sides. After crossing, Koh Kong town is about 8 kilometers away. I usually recommend hiring a taxi, which costs around 300 baht per car (for one or two people), as it’s more convenient and faster.

I once stayed overnight in Koh Kong before continuing to Sihanoukville and Kampot on that Cambodia trip. Although it’s a small town, Koh Kong has charm and tranquility quite different from major tourist cities. It’s suitable for those who like unhurried travel and want to experience authentic local life.

Lifestyle and Food Around Khlong Yai Checkpoint

When it comes to Trat Province, many think mainly of Koh Chang. But actually, this province has much more to explore, especially if you love fresh seafood and local market atmospheres. I have written aboutFull-On Trat Seafoodwhich is full of freshness and bold flavors. I recommend trying it before or after crossing this checkpoint to complete your travel experience.

The Thai border market at Ban Hat Lek, though not large, offers some snacks and local food. I enjoy walking around to observe local life here. The mornings are quite lively, especially when trucks deliver goods from Cambodia. Most people here speak some Thai and are friendly, making travel and communication easy.

Recommended Routes and Tips Before Visiting Khlong Yai Checkpoint

Travelers interested in using this route should prepare all documents and check operating hours before traveling, as this checkpoint is not open 24 hours. Also, plan your onward travel from the checkpoint carefully because transportation within Cambodia mainly relies on taxis or hired vehicles.

If you want to explore Trat Province in depth and get to know it better, I recommend the articleTrat Travel Informationthat I have written, which provides a comprehensive overview and interesting spots covering nature, culture, and food that are equally impressive.
