Traveling in Trat, a seaside town beyond the beauty of Koh Chang
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to discover another side of Trat Province that many often overlook. This province is not only famous for Koh Chang but is also full of charm from its culture, lifestyle, and beautiful nature along the eastern coast of Thailand.
Trat is more than just Koh Chang
Many people who hear the name “Trat” often think only of Koh Chang, the large island famous for its clear sea and diving activities. But if you take a stroll in Trat town for a day, you will find there is much more to discover—from the morning market filled with fresh seafood at prices cheaper and fresher than many other coastal provinces, to the culture of the “Chong” people, the indigenous ethnic group of the area. There are many fascinating stories and cultural traces here.
Nature and coastline waiting for you to experience
Along the Trat coastline, there are rich mangrove forests that remain well-preserved and natural. Moreover, Trat has a total of 52 small islands, including the rare “Black Sand Beach,” one of the few places in the world, located right here in Trat. This is something I recently discovered and was very excited to see with my own eyes.
Trat fresh market and must-try fresh seafood
One thing I, mr.hotsia, really enjoy is walking through the morning market in Trat town. It is full of fresh seafood like shrimp, shellfish, crab, fish, and even duck clam and seaweed, which are easy to find at affordable prices. I have visited the market and found many fresh and cheap items, making me confident that this place is truly a paradise for seafood lovers.
For an authentic breakfast experience, I recommend the Prasan Pork Blood Soup shop in town. It opens early and has a rich flavor loved by locals. For dinner, Kluay Nam Wa restaurant is a must-visit every time I come. Their fish hotpot is delicious and reasonably priced. Once you try it, you will be hooked like me.
Accommodation in Trat town and transportation
For those planning to stay several days, I recommend accommodations in Trat town such asPop Guesthousewhere I have stayed. There are two locations close to each other, affordable at about 700 baht per night, with air conditioning and Wi-Fi. It is suitable for travelers who want to stay in town and easily travel to various islands. There are also homestays and hotels available in various styles to suit your preferences.
Traveling to Trat Province is very convenient. I used Cherdchai Tour bus service from Ekkamai, Bangkok, directly to Trat town. If you prefer driving, you can easily drive yourself. Within the province, there are vans and passenger boats serving trips to Koh Kood and other islands. Additionally, there are vans running from Trat to Hat Lek border for onward travel to Cambodia.
Connect your feelings withKhlong Yai - Koh Kong Border Crossing
If you are interested in extending your trip abroad, you can stop byHat Lek Border Crossingwhich is a permanent border checkpoint to Cambodia. From here, you can easily take a vehicle to Koh Kong city or other cities in Cambodia. This checkpoint operates from morning until 8 PM, ideal for travelers who want a relaxed border crossing experience.
Enhance your taste withTrat SeafoodFresh and fully loaded
If you love seafood, I recommend watchingmy full seafood feast review in Traton YouTube to see the visuals and freshness of the seafood I tasted myself. Or if you like the idea of having the sea brought to your table all at once, check outHearty 3 kilos of shrimp, shellfish, and squid — bringing the sea of Trat right herewhich I enjoyed eating to my heart’s content. It’s an experience seafood lovers must not miss.
Summary
For me, mr.hotsia, Trat is not just a tourist destination with beautiful islands and clear waters. It is a province full of stories waiting for you to learn—culture, local lifestyle, well-preserved nature, and fresh seafood at prices beyond your expectations. If you plan to travel to the eastern sea, don’t forget to think of Trat, a small town with so much more to discover.
