Sisaket Shrimp Traps

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit Sisaket Province, a land in southern Isan filled with rich culture and long history. Besides ancient Khmer temples and many cultural attractions, there is also an interesting local lifestyle feature called “shrimp traps” or Sisaket Shrimp Traps, something I had never seen anywhere else. I want to share this in-depth from my real experience.

I started my journey from Sisaket city, a peaceful town with unique charm, strolling through the morning market.Sisaket Morning MarketHere, not only is there a wide variety of local food and fresh produce, but also rows of shrimp traps placed along a small canal near the market. Locals use shrimp traps made from bamboo and other natural materials, combined with clever design to catch shrimp in the canal and natural water sources.

These shrimp traps have unusual shapes, unlike those seen in other regions. Generally, they are bamboo cages shaped like cones with pointed ends to trap the entrance. What’s interesting is the method of setting the traps, which requires knowledge and experience passed down through generations. I asked some locals, and they said the shrimp caught are sold at the market or used as household food. It is also an important supplementary income for families in this rural area.

The atmosphere when I arrived in the morning was filled with the essence of local life—the lively chatter of people at the market and the sight of shrimp traps that felt like a scene from the past. After walking around the market for a while, I followed locals to see the shrimp trapping method in a nearby canal. I observed the detailed way of setting traps, which is not easy to catch many shrimp daily. It requires technique and choosing the right time.

For those interested in trying to make these shrimp traps, I recommend visiting Sisaket during the flood season, as this is when shrimp enter the canals the most. You will also get to experience the authentic traditional lifestyle of true Isan people.

Besides shrimp traps, Sisaket also offers interesting cultural and natural attractions, such as the Phra Wihan Temple with historical ties to the ancient Khmer Empire. For those who want to delve deeper into the history and culture of Sisaket, I recommend reading my previous article.Travel Sisaketthat I wrote earlier.

Getting here is not difficult. If you drive from Bangkok, take the Saraburi route, turn right toward Isan, pass Ubon Ratchathani Province, and head to Sisaket. If you use public transport, you can take a direct bus from the new Mo Chit station to Sisaket comfortably.

After seeing the shrimp traps, I also tried local food at the market and nearby restaurants, which I must say were delicious and flavorful. For example, Tum Laos with its spicy and refreshing taste from fresh vegetables at Sisaket market. If you want to try other signature dishes, there are plenty of options here.

For anyone looking for a unique travel experience, I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend visiting the shrimp traps of Sisaket. Not only will you see traditional shrimp catching techniques, but you will also experience the true culture and lifestyle of southern Isan people. This place is not just a tourist spot but a fascinating life lesson.

If you want to see the real atmosphere, I also have a video clipSisaket Shrimp Trapsthat I recorded while walking through Sisaket market. You can see the full picture and feel the experience I had that day.

Finally, if you visit Sisaket and want to experience local life up close, I recommend taking a tuk-tuk tour around the city.Tuk-tuk Tour in SisaketEnjoy the nature and culture of this city alongside visiting the shrimp traps. I guarantee you will have a unique and memorable impression.
