Open the door to An Giang Province, Southern Vietnam, a place you shouldn't miss
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take everyone to experience the charm of An Giang Province, located in the southwestern region of Vietnam, about 231 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. This province is unique because it borders Cambodia to the northwest for 104 kilometers and is also close to Kien Giang Province to the southwest, as well as Can Tho city and Dong Thap Province nearby. It serves as a gateway connecting the cultures and trade between Vietnam and Cambodia.
An Giang covers a vast area of 3,536.7 square kilometers, mostly agricultural land totaling 280,658 hectares, and about 14,724 hectares of forest. Life here is deeply connected to nature, and it is home to over 2.1 million people, including a significant Khmer ethnic minority of 114,632 people, or about 5.17% of the total population. It is the most populous province in the Mekong Delta region.
Chau Doc City, a key stop for travelers
For me, mr.hotsia, the main destination on this trip to An Giang Province is Chau Doc City, a border town with the Bassac River flowing through it. On the first morning walking around the city, I really enjoyed the riverside atmosphere, especially the riverside park where locals relax, stroll, and socialize in the evening. The Basa Fish Monument, known in Thai as “Pla Phao,” stands proudly by the river, accompanied by a beautiful fountain and decorative lights, creating a romantic ambiance at night—perfect for a leisurely walk after dinner.
Chau Doc is also an important border crossing connecting Vietnam and Cambodia, especially a rare international water border checkpoint. I had the chance to take a speedboat from Chau Doc across the Mekong River to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, which was an exciting and unique experience because this border checkpoint is located on a tributary of the Mekong River, not a typical land border.Read more about the boat crossing from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh
Markets and Local Food in Chau Doc
In Chau Doc, the fresh market is the heart of local life. I strolled through the market and tried many dishes, including pork belly rice, which is rich and flavorful, available in the market. There is also a bánh mì shop in front of the market selling French-style bread filled with Vietnamese pork sausage and various spices—so delicious I had to recommend it. Additionally, there are many riverside restaurants ranging from affordable casual spots to upscale places where you can enjoy views of the Bassac River.
Don't forget to try the roadside fresh fruit smoothies called “Sinh Tố,” which are refreshing and inexpensive. Or if you want to refresh yourself with fresh coconut water after a day of walking, I am confident the food here will make you feel as warm as being at home.Read more about Chau Doc cuisine
Transportation and Boat Crossings in An Giang Province
For travelers like me, accessing An Giang Province is very convenient, especially by boat crossing at Cao Lanh in Dong Thap Province to Long Xuyen, the capital city of An Giang Province. Long Xuyen is large and serves as the political, economic, and cultural center of the Mekong Delta region.
At Cao Lanh pier, boat crossings are easy and fast. Large boats that can carry multiple cars are available all the time without long waits. For passengers like me, the crossing is free, while cars pay a reasonable fee. The wide Mekong River views give a sense of peace and the grandeur of nature here.Read about the boat crossing at Cao Lanh
Long Xuyen, the Heart of An Giang
Speaking of Long Xuyen, it is quite an interesting city as the center of An Giang Province. It has a population of about 300,000 and is located about 45 kilometers from the Cambodian border. This city is a great stopover for travelers who want to truly experience local life and culture.
Long Xuyen offers various accommodation options to suit different budgets and traveler needs. If you plan to visit An Giang Province, it is advisable to book your stay in Long Xuyen in advance for convenience.Read travel information about Long Xuyen
