Chau Doc City, which I, mr.hotsia, must say exceeded my expectations
When talking about An Giang Province, I, mr.hotsia, have written about it many times, but Chau Doc City impressed me far more than I had imagined. This city is located on the Bassac River, one of the major rivers flowing through the Mekong Delta, and Chau Doc itself is an important waterway junction between Vietnam and Cambodia.
When I arrived in Chau Doc, the first thing that caught my eye was the atmosphere along the Bassac River, which has a nicely sized park where locals come to stroll, relax, and jog. In the evening, the cool air combined with the lights from the fountain and the Basa Fish Monument—known in Thai as “Pla Po”—standing proudly by the riverbank creates a very charming ambiance. The beautiful lighting made me want to sit and sip coffee leisurely or just walk around watching people at night.
A Key Water Border Crossing City
Chau Doc is not just an ordinary city but a crucial checkpoint connecting Vietnam and Cambodia. It has one of the rare international water border crossings in the world. Tourists like me can comfortably take a speedboat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh. This fast boat journey offers views of the changing riverside life along the Mekong and makes me feel like I’m having a close-up adventure on the Mekong River.See details of speedboats from Chau Doc to Phnom PenhAvailable here
This city is a major water trade center with a huge market. Chau Doc Market is full of fresh goods, seafood, fruits, vegetables, and a variety of products. Importantly, prices are very affordable. I enjoy watching people trade and tasting local food at this market. The banh mi shop in front of the market is so delicious I stop by every time. I also never miss the braised pork rice here; it’s rich and flavorful, a simple dish but very satisfying.
Must-Try Food Along the Bassac River
If you want to eat by the Bassac River, there are restaurants ranging from cheap to upscale. Riverside eateries offer fresh seafood, traditional Vietnamese dishes, or local specialty banh mi with Vietnamese pork sausage. I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying the fresh fruit smoothie “sinh to” sold by street vendors—it’s very refreshing. Or if you prefer a chill sit-down meal with river views, there are many places to choose from.
Speaking of Vietnamese food, I have a favorite clip featuring various Vietnamese dishes, such as grilled button squid that looks mouthwatering.Click to watch Vietnamese Grilled Button SquidOr Vietnamese Chicken Biryani with rich flavorsWatch the Vietnamese Chicken Biryani clipAnd Nem Thang, another famous Vietnamese dishWatch the Vietnamese Nem Thang clipKeep these in mind for when you visit so you can try them yourself.
Accommodation and Transportation in Chau Doc
There are many accommodation options in Chau Doc, ranging from basic hotels without stars to five-star hotels. I, mr.hotsia, recommend always booking hotels in advance, especially during festivals or long holidays, as there are quite a number of tourists here. You can easily book through Agoda or other websites.See more hotel information in Chau Doc
If traveling to Chau Doc from other cities in An Giang Province, I have traveled from Long Xuyen City and crossed by boat from Cao Lanh City in Dong Thap Province to Chau Doc. The ferry crossing at Cao Lanh is very fast and convenient, with boats departing every 5 minutes and taking only about 10 minutes.Read more about the ferry crossing at Cao LanhFor those interested in information about Long Xuyen City, the capital of An Giang Province, you can check outLong Xuyen City Travel Information
Tips and Warnings from mr.hotsia
While walking around the city, I, mr.hotsia, noticed motorbike taxis and some groups trying to offer illegal massage or other services prohibited in Vietnam. I strongly recommend avoiding these for your safety and to avoid trouble.
Additionally, Chau Doc has several tennis courts and quality tour boat services, especially the speedboat to Phnom Penh that I have tried and was very impressed with. It is not only fast but also comfortable, suitable for tourists who want quick and safe travel.See tour boat details
