Chau Doc City Food by the Bassac River, a flavor you must try
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Chau Doc City, An Giang Province, located by the Bassac River in the northwest region of Vietnam. It is a city full of charm in both atmosphere and culture. Especially the food here, which I believe you must not miss, as it reflects the local lifestyle and the cultural diversity blending Vietnamese, Cambodian, and various ethnic minorities.
Strolling along the Bassac River in the evening, I saw food stalls lined up all along the way. From small roadside shops selling Bánh mì, the fragrant French bread filled with Vietnamese pork sausage, to noodle dishes and rice plates at affordable prices, perfect for travelers like me who enjoy trying local delicious food without luxury.
One of the Bánh mì shops that impressed me greatly is located in front of Chau Doc Market. It’s a small shop that looks ordinary, but the Bánh mì here is crispy on the outside and soft inside, with thick slices of pork sausage seasoned perfectly. Eating it with fresh vegetables and the shop’s special dipping sauce enhances the flavor to perfection. Additionally, the market offers a variety of rice dishes to choose from, including the braised pork rice I tried in the morning, which had a perfectly balanced sweet and savory taste with tender pork. I must say, this is the true flavor of Chau Doc.
Chau Doc Market, a hub of flavors and fresh ingredients
The market in Chau Doc City is a place I love to experience the authentic local atmosphere. It’s not just about food but also a center of culture and lifestyle for the diverse ethnic groups and minorities in An Giang Province. The market is large and filled with fresh food, seafood caught from the river, and seasonal fruits and vegetables.
After enjoying the braised pork rice, I wandered around the market and found fresh fruit smoothies, known locally as “sinh tố,” sold by the roadside. The fresh fruit is blended finely, with a sweet and slightly sour refreshing taste that helps cool down in the humid southern Vietnam climate. I sipped my sinh tố while watching people pass by. Chau Doc Market feels like the vibrant heart of the city, full of life.
Bassac Riverfront Restaurants: Great Atmosphere, Great Taste
If you want to enjoy food in a relaxed atmosphere with a view of the Bassac River, Chau Doc offers various dining options, from simple floor-seating eateries to beautifully decorated restaurants with panoramic river views. I chose to sit at an open-air riverside restaurant, enjoying the cool breeze mixed with the aroma of the river and freshly caught seafood.
Recommended seafood dishes include grilled button squid, fragrant with charcoal and Vietnamese spices, or grilled river prawns with sweet, firm meat. There is also local Vietnamese cuisine like Nem Phang, fermented pork wrapped in bamboo tubes, served with fresh vegetables and a special dipping sauce. For those interested in deep Vietnamese culinary experiences, I highly recommend following my footsteps.
Chau Doc: A Border Town and the Starting Point of Adventure
Chau Doc is not only famous for its food but also an important city in An Giang Province with a water border crossing to Cambodia. Visitors often use this city as a base or rest stop before taking a speedboat to Phnom Penh, which is an exciting and convenient travel experience.
