Long Xuyen, an important city in the Mekong Delta you shouldn't miss
When talking about the political, economic, cultural, and scientific center of An Giang province in southern Vietnam, under the atmosphere of the Mekong Delta, the nameLong Xuyendefinitely ranks among the top. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to seriously explore this city during a trip from Ho Chi Minh City, which is only about 180 kilometers away. For anyone planning to visit An Giang province, I recommend stopping by Long Xuyen first to absorb the local lifestyle and the calm atmosphere.
Long Xuyen, a vibrant and unusually large city
Long Xuyen is a city with nearly three hundred thousand residents and covers an area of 130 square kilometers. I, mr.hotsia, was quite surprised to find that this city might be even larger than Can Tho, the capital of a neighboring province. This makes Long Xuyen an important center in the Mekong Delta for trade, education, and even local arts and culture.
I traveled into this city by bus from Ho Chi Minh City, passing through routes filled with beautiful rice fields and small canals. At some points, I had to take a boat from Cao Lanh city in Dong Thap province to enter Long Xuyen. This boat crossing was a memorable experience as it blended land and water travel harmoniously.Read more about the boat crossing at Cao Lanh
Easy access and a variety of accommodation options
If you want to experience the atmosphere of Long Xuyen, I, mr.hotsia, recommend booking accommodation in advance because the city attracts a fair number of tourists. Hotels in Long Xuyen range from standard to premium grades, with prices that are reasonable compared to the comfort offered. There are many hotels conveniently located near local markets where you can stroll and try delicious food.
Riverside lifestyle and fresh markets not to be missed
Long Xuyen is located in the Mekong Delta area, surrounded by rivers and tributaries. The lifestyle of the people here is deeply connected to the river. I, mr.hotsia, enjoy walking through the fresh markets in this city, which are full of colorful fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, and seafood from the Mekong River, as well as rare local dishes like “Banh Mi” – Vietnamese sandwiches filled with pork sausage and fresh vegetables. If you visit Long Xuyen, don’t forget to try it.
Markets in Long Xuyen are lively all day, especially in the morning when locals bring their produce to sell energetically. After walking around, I stopped to drink a smoothie called “Sinh To,” which is sweet, fragrant, and refreshing, a great energy booster.
Local food and flavors that impressed me, mr.hotsia
The food in Long Xuyen stands out for the freshness of its ingredients, especially seafood from the Mekong River such as fresh fish, shrimp, and button squid that I tasted at a small riverside restaurant. The flavors were rich and spicy in true Vietnamese style. There is also Vietnamese chicken biryani that I personally recommend. The fragrant rice and tender chicken were so delicious I had to order more.Watch the Vietnamese chicken biryani clipthat I recorded myself.
Another must-try dish is Nem Phang, Vietnamese marinated pork with a perfect balance of sour and salty flavors. It is best enjoyed with fresh vegetables and sticky rice, a truly perfect combination.Click to see Vietnamese Nem PhangFor those who love bold and spicy flavors
Connected with nearby cities in An Giang province
Long Xuyen is located in An Giang province, which has ethnic and cultural diversity, including a significant Khmer minority. I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Chau Doc city, not far away, which is famous for its floating markets and easy border crossing to Phnom Penh, Cambodia.Read about my experience in Chau Docin my article. There are also many interesting routes in this province, such as taking a boat from Cao Lanh to Long Xuyen or exploring local markets and communities that still preserve traditional culture well.
Summary of my Long Xuyen experience with mr.hotsia
For me, visiting Long Xuyen was not just about touring a big city in the Mekong Delta but about experiencing a lifestyle deeply connected to the Mekong River, tasting fresh local food, and witnessing the cultural diversity of southern Vietnamese people up close. For anyone looking for new destinations beyond famous tourist cities, Long Xuyen is another option I, mr.hotsia, truly want you to experience.
For travel preparation, don’t forget to book accommodation in advance and prepare for boat crossings if you choose the route from Dong Thap. For those wanting to deeply learn about local culture and food, this trip will enrich your experience in ways you won’t find elsewhere in Vietnam.
