Sunset at the Mekong River in Ben Tre
When talking about Ben Tre province in Vietnam, many people may think of a province full of coconut trees and famous coconut candies. But for me, mr.hotsia, one of the most impressive things is the evening atmosphere by the large Mekong River flowing through this city. Locals here call it both the “Mekong River” and the “Ben Tre River.” In fact, it is the Mekong River branching into two main streams, one of which passes through Ben Tre province.
I arrived in Ben Tre city in the afternoon and didn’t miss the chance to find the famous Mekong River bridge here. This bridge is very tall and you can walk up to enjoy a 360-degree view. From the bridge, you can see both Ben Tre city and the Mekong River stretching endlessly. On the day I visited, the weather was nice, and the sky began to change into a beautiful golden color reflecting on the river’s surface, making the scene look like a living painting.
While I stood watching the sunset, I saw many Ben Tre locals spending their free time fishing here. Some sat in small boats drifting below the bridge. The atmosphere was peaceful and simple. International boats passed by occasionally, creating movement on the water and along the riverbank. It felt like a movie perfectly telling the story of life along the Mekong River.
For those interested in the morning atmosphere, I recommend watching the clip and story of my trip to Champasak. In the morning, the sunrise over the Mekong River is a bright golden color, much more beautiful than in Ben Tre. The guesthouse owner where I stayed even named it “Golden Light Guesthouse.” If you like natural and quiet atmospheres, you shouldn’t miss it.
Ben Tre Province and Life Along the Mekong River
Ben Tre is a province located in the Mekong Delta region, famous for coconut farming and nicknamed “Vietnam’s Coconut Province.” Coconut trees grow everywhere, and a must-try is the famous “coconut candy” well-known throughout Vietnam. I have written details about it in an article.Ben Tre ProvinceFor those who like souvenirs or want to learn about the local community lifestyle, I recommend visiting the markets and trying the coconut candies sold widely in the city.
Traveling to Ben Tre is very convenient. If you start from Ho Chi Minh City, there is a bus service by Mai Linh company, which I have used. The bus is air-conditioned, comfortable, and reasonably priced. The bus passes over a beautiful suspension bridge crossing the Mekong River. If you take this bus, don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the views of the bridge and both riverbanks. I have written travel details in an article.Bus from Ho Chi Minh to Ben TreAlso
Night Atmosphere and Food by the River
After watching the sunset on the bridge, I recommend taking a walk around Ben Tre city at night. The nighttime atmosphere here has a unique charm, especially around the central lake, which has a vibe similar to Nong Jong Kham in Mae Hong Son. There are shops selling homemade snacks and food, giving a warm and friendly feeling.
There is also a delicious dry noodle shop near the bridge. I tried it and can say it was so tasty that I wanted to eat several more bowls. Don’t forget to visit the central city park with sculptures and monuments, as well as groups of young people gathering to breakdance for entertainment.
After that, I walked to the Co-op Mart opposite the park to buy local wine, which is much cheaper than in Thailand. Vietnamese wine tastes good and is perfect for chilling by the river. I like pairing the wine with grilled dried eel, a famous dish of Ben Tre. The flavor is smooth with a slight crispiness, making a perfect match.
Lifestyle and Impressions of mr.hotsia
One unforgettable impression for me was seeing Ben Tre locals living simply with the Mekong River, whether fishing, rowing boats, or chatting by the riverbank. Watching the sunset from the tall bridge made me feel the peace and charm of this small city surrounded by abundant nature.
If you are planning to travel to Vietnam and want to experience a less touristy atmosphere, Ben Tre is a great choice. I believe you will love it as much as mr.hotsia does.
