Night Walk Around Ben Tre with mr.hotsia
Ben Tre, the province I nicknamed "Vietnam's Coconut Province," is a destination many know through Mekong Delta tours. But for me, mr.hotsia, walking around here at night is a deeper and more memorable experience.
Starting at the large Mekong River bridge in Ben Tre, which is actually one branch of the Mekong flowing through the city, I watched the sunset from this bridge. The evening atmosphere with golden light reflecting on the water is an unforgettable image. Though I've seen golden light in Champasak, this place has its own special charm.Read about the sunset on the Mekong River in Ben Treto see this atmosphere in detail
After the sun disappeared below the horizon, I walked down to a nearby dry noodle shop at the bridge's neck. This shop impressed me a lot. The dry noodles here are flavorful, with rich broth, chewy noodles, and importantly, very affordable. Tasting local food like this made me feel like I truly experienced the lifestyle of Ben Tre locals.
Then I walked into the city center to the central lake of Ben Tre. The nighttime atmosphere reminded me of Nong Jong Kham in Mae Hong Son, Thailand. Around the lake are simple but charming local snack stalls. Locals come out to stroll and chat, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere. I liked this because I saw the real life of the people here, not just tourist spots.
A little further to E Noi Street (a main street in the city), you'll find the central park. Here, there are beautiful sculptures and statues decorated with lovely lights at night. This is where Ben Tre youth gather. Some nights you can see teenagers breakdancing joyfully. I, mr.hotsia, watched and felt the energy and vibrancy of this city. Opposite the park is Co.op Mart, a local shopping mall where locals shop. I stopped by to buy Vietnamese wine, which is much cheaper than back home and, importantly, less fattening than beer.
After shopping at Co.op Mart, I returned to my riverside accommodation, opened the wine I bought, and sipped it while ordering grilled eel, a famous Ben Tre dish. The dry crispy grilled eel dipped in spicy sauce paired with the wine I chose was an incredible combination. This was a highlight of my trip.
If you plan to visit Ben Tre, I recommend staying until nighttime to truly experience local life, whether at the lakeside night market or the park where people sit and breakdance without shame. Ben Tre's nightlife is not quiet like other small towns but lively and warm, which I, mr.hotsia, find very charming.

Local lifestyle and atmosphere encountered
During my night walk in Ben Tre, I met local snack vendors, breakdancing youth, and locals relaxing by the river. The atmosphere reminded me of many towns back home, whether groups chatting in the park or simple but charming food stalls.
Also, tasting local dishes like crispy grilled eel with intense flavor is an unforgettable memory. I witnessed the dedication and local wisdom in cooking that give Southern Vietnamese cuisine its unique character.
