Ben Tre Province, the Coconut City of the Mekong Delta

If you ask me, mr.hotsia, where in Vietnam the scent of coconut is so pervasive you can almost feel it from the very first step off the vehicle, my answer isBen Tre ProvinceThis Mekong River riverside province is truly the coconut capital of Vietnam. The land here, formed from Mekong River sediment, is so fertile that coconut trees grow abundantly everywhere. I traveled from Ho Chi Minh City, only 85 kilometers away, taking about an hour and a half on a comfortable Mai Linh van service, which I recommend for travelers wanting to experience the genuine hospitality of Vietnamese locals on this route (Read more about traveling from Ho Chi Minh to Ben Tre)

Coconuts and Coconut Candy are the Highlights Here

Walking into Ben Tre city, the first thing you will smell and see are coconuts in every form—from coconut trees lining both sides of the river to coconut candies sold from roadside stalls to large city malls. I tasted the coconut candy here and can say it is fresh, sweet, and has a unique fragrance that made me buy some to bring back for my friends (Read about Ben Tre Coconut Candy)

Local food here is equally distinctive, especially the grilled eel I tried at a restaurant near the Ben Tre river bridge. The rich flavor, herbal aroma, and perfectly grilled texture make the eel crispy on the outside and tender inside. It pairs wonderfully with Vietnamese wine, which is much cheaper than in Thailand. I like to buy wine from Co.op Mart to enjoy with dinner at night (Read the night walk review in Ben Tre)

Boat Tour Through Coconut Gardens and Riverside Life

One of my most memorable experiences in Ben Tre was booking a half-day boat tour through the coconut gardens scattered along the small waterways around the city. Rowing through the shady, cool mangrove forests, I witnessed the local lifestyle deeply connected to the Mekong River—making coconut sweets, brick firing from sediment soil, and traditional fishing (Read about Ben Tre Brick Kilns)

Along the boat route, I saw locals paddling to find food, continuing a way of life passed down from their grandparents. The Mekong here is not only a major waterway for transportation but also a place for relaxation and an important food source for the community.

Sunset at the Ben Tre River Bridge

I don’t want anyone to miss the experience of watching the sunset on the Mekong River bridge, locally known as the Ben Tre River. This tall bridge stretches across the river, offering a wide sky view and beautiful water reflections. At sunset, the river turns into a shimmering golden canvas. This is one of the images I, mr.hotsia, will never forget (Read the sunset review at the Mekong River in Ben Tre)

Night Walk and Lakeside Atmosphere in the City Center

After sunset, I usually take a walk around the city at night, especially by the central lake, which has a peaceful atmosphere similar to Nong Jong Kham in Mae Hong Son. Local vendors set up stalls selling snacks and small souvenirs, creating a warm and simple feeling of Ben Tre life.

The city park area also features sculptures and monuments beautifully lit at night, a popular spot for locals and youth to hang out, breakdance, and create a lively atmosphere. I enjoy stopping by Co.op Mart to buy wine and then return to my guesthouse restaurant to sip wine with grilled eel for a relaxed dinner.

Accommodation and Transportation in Ben Tre

Regarding accommodation in Ben Tre city, I stayed near the river bridge, which is a good location within walking distance to the market and lake. The city has a limited number of hotels but sufficient for most tourists. Room rates are about 400-600 baht per night, which I find reasonable for the quality and atmosphere here. If your schedule is flexible, you can walk in to find a place or book in advance through Agoda for convenience.

For traveling to Ben Tre, you can take a bus from the Southern Bus Station in Ho Chi Minh City or purchase a tour that includes this route. Most tours stop at Ben Tre before continuing to Can Tho to visit the famous floating market (Travel information from Ho Chi Minh to Ben Tre)
