Ben Tre Brick Kiln: A place to witness authentic local life and traditional clay craft

Throughout several weeks of my journey as mr.hotsia from Ho Chi Minh City down to southern Vietnam, one of the most memorable experiences was cruising to see riverside life inBen Tre Provincealso known by many as the “Land of Coconuts” in Vietnam because coconut trees grow lushly throughout the province. But this time, I didn’t come just to see coconuts. I came to explore the traditional handicraft that still preserves its original way of life — the “brick kiln” or Ben Tre Brick Kiln located along the Mekong River.

If you have ever taken a boat trip along the waterways of the Mekong Delta, you will see many brick factories lined up along the canals and rivers. But here in Ben Tre, I got the clearest and most in-depth view because I bought a half-day tour that took me through the entire brick-making process, from pressing clay into blocks to firing bricks in kilns fueled by river gravel.

Factory atmosphere and brick-making process

The factory I visited had several brick kilns, but only one was in operation. The process starts by scooping clay mixed with water and pressing it into rectangular molds. Then the bricks are sun-dried until completely dry. During some periods, the sun was very strong; even I, walking and taking photos, felt the heat burning my skin. After drying, the bricks are placed into the kiln — or you could call it an oven — where they are baked with high heat from burning gravel piled beneath the kiln.

I saw the brick kiln workers carefully controlling the fire to maintain the right temperature, ensuring the bricks do not crack or remain undercooked. The work looked challenging and required great skill and experience. When I asked the locals, they said this brick firing method has been passed down for many generations. This is a craft that truly reflects the lifestyle and wisdom of the local people.

My perspective on Ben Tre and the journey

Ben Tre Province is located along the Mekong River, about 85 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City. For my trip, I chose to use the van service of Mai Linh company, known for its comfort and good service. The air-conditioned ride passed over a suspension bridge with beautiful views of the Mekong River, especially at sunset, which was a scene I really enjoyed. Upon arriving in Ben Tre town, I had the chance to stroll at night through the market and around the central lake. The area is full of a friendly community atmosphere with shops selling local food and coconut-based sweets such asBen Tre coconut candywhich is famous. I really enjoyed eating fresh sweets after exploring riverside life and the brick kiln.

Riverside life and connection with nature

The experience at the brick kiln is not just about craftsmanship but also about immersing in the simple lifestyle of the riverside people along the Mekong. I saw workers chatting during breaks, children playing in the water, and fishing boats passing by. The atmosphere was peaceful with the scent of clay mixed with smoke from the kiln, as if stepping back in time to when communities closely depended on nature.

If you visit here, taking a half-day tour to see the brick kiln is a highly worthwhile and unique activity. Besides learning the brick-making process, a fundamental building material, you also witness the real life of locals who remain deeply connected to their culture and work with artistry.

Recommended trip and what to prepare

It is recommended to visit in the morning or early afternoon to avoid the intense sun and heat from the kiln. Also, prepare comfortable shoes and a camera because there are many photo opportunities here — from rows of bricks, brick kiln workers at work, to nearby views of the Mekong River.
