Taking the bus from Ben Tre to My Tho, experience the riverside lifestyle along the Mekong River with mr.hotsia
Traveling from Ben Tre city (Bến Tre) to My Tho (My Tho) by bus is an experience that mr.hotsia must say is definitely unlike ordinary tourist buses. Here, I got to see the real life of Vietnamese people up close — vendors, farmers, and locals riding with us. It was a great opportunity to chat, use simple Vietnamese, and practice conversation along the way. This was the moment I truly felt connected to the authentic life of the locals.
Ben Tre is a province located in the Mekong Delta, also known as the Mekong River Delta. This province is called the land of coconuts because along the route and throughout the area are lush green coconut gardens. A famous and well-known product isBen Tre coconut candywhich you can see sold in markets and along the roadside throughout the way.
After leaving Ben Tre city, I had to walk to catch the bus on the roadside near the market and local shops because the Ben Tre bus station is about 7 kilometers away and there aren’t many buses departing from there (read more atBen Tre Bus Station). The bus I took that day was a regular bus, not luxurious or air-conditioned like big tour buses, but it felt more like riding a local bus with Vietnamese friends.
Atmosphere on the bus and roadside community
The bus was full of locals, farmers, and vendors traveling to My Tho city. Some carried bags of fruit or fresh produce. I noticed that when they saw me as a foreigner, they smiled and tried to talk using simple language, which helped me practice more. It was the most effective learning because I used the language directly with native speakers.
Along both sides of the road, the bus passed endless green coconut gardens, along with simple houses and the lifestyle of the locals. Children played by the roadside, vendors sold goods by the roadside, and locals rode bicycles or motorbikes passing by. This kind of atmosphere is rarely seen in big cities full of tall buildings and chaos.
Suspension bridge over the Mekong River, a must-see viewpoint
Along the way, the bus crossed the Mekong River on a long and beautiful suspension bridge. This is a spot mr.hotsia recommends preparing your camera because the views on both sides of the Mekong River are vast and truly beautiful. As the bus moved across the bridge, the blue sky reflected on the water was an impressive sight. If you come in the evening at sunset, the view here becomes even more stunning.
This bridge connects Ben Tre province with My Tho city in Tien Giang province. For those interested in watching the sunset over the Mekong River in Ben Tre city, you can follow the articleSunset over the Mekong River in Ben Tre citywhich I wrote earlier.
My Tho city, the starting point for exploring the Mekong Delta
When the bus arrived in My Tho city, I felt a slight difference from Ben Tre. My Tho is a livelier city and serves as the gateway to tourism in the Mekong Delta. Many people use this city as a starting point for boat tours to floating markets or small islands in the area.
Taking the bus from Ben Tre to My Tho is not just a change of location but a journey that offers a chance to truly learn about the local way of life, to experience and converse, and to see nature and culture without any decoration or alteration.
Travel tips and what to prepare
For those who want to try this route, mr.hotsia recommends bringing drinking water and some snacks because the bus may not stop at convenience stores often. Also, prepare your camera to capture the views of the bridge and both sides of the Mekong River. Additionally, talking with locals will make the journey more enjoyable and enriching.

Recommended Vietnamese food videos nearby
Along the way or upon arrival in My Tho city, you might want to try local Vietnamese dishes with authentic flavors that I recommend, such as grilled squid or Vietnamese chicken biryani. You can watch examples and how to eat them in the videos I have compiled below.
All of these are the real memories and experiences of mr.hotsia traveling by bus from Ben Tre to My Tho that I want to share so everyone can know and try to experience themselves.
