Mui Ne Sand Dunes: A Unique Beauty in Vietnam
When talking about sand dunes in Southeast Asia, the name that I, mr.hotsia, think of first isMui Ne Sand Dunes(Mui Ne Sand Dunes) located in Bình Thuận province, Vietnam. This is not the kind of desert we are familiar with in Africa or America, but a sand dune with its own charm, perfect for those who want to experience a uniquely beautiful atmosphere in Asia.
Mui Ne Sand Dunes cover a vast area of over 500 square kilometers, about 50 kilometers long and an average width of around 10 kilometers. The sand features both red and white colors alternating, but the most prominent and popular among tourists isthe White Sand Duneswhich are about 25 kilometers from Mui Ne town.
Travel and Atmosphere at Mui Ne Sand Dunes
I, mr.hotsia, chose to walk from Mui Ne town to the White Sand Dunes because motorcycle rental prices are quite high. More importantly, walking allows you to truly absorb the atmosphere. The road from town to the dunes runs along the coast with beautiful sea views all the way.
Upon arrival, I spent about 2 hours walking, taking photos, and exploring the dunes in detail. The dunes have small sand waves constantly shaped by the wind, making your feet feel cool and comfortable. However, be careful of sand dust that might get into your camera and equipment.
The atmosphere here is peaceful and very beautiful, especially if you choose photo spots away from crowded tourist areas. I recommend walking down into the sand valleys that offer different perspectives from the dune tops, capturing stunning images of white sand contrasting with the deep blue sky.
Mui Ne Red Sand Dunes and Sunset Viewing
Besides the White Sand Dunes, there are alsothe Red Sand Duneswhich are only 17 kilometers from Mui Ne town. This is a popular spot for tourists to watch the sunset. When I was there, the evening sunlight made the red sand look beautiful and warm, a perfect way to end a desert trip.
Here, I chose a tour from The Sinh Tourist company for just 7 USD or about 210 THB, including about 4 hours of touring. This tour also takes you to visit Mui Ne fishing village. The high viewpoint of this village is another favorite spot of mine, mr.hotsia, offering views of local life and panoramic sea views as beautiful as the dunes.
Tips and Precautions for Visiting Mui Ne Sand Dunes
Many people may choose to rent a motorcycle or an old jeep with a driver to explore the dunes and surrounding villages. I recommend this for large groups as it is cost-effective and fun. For solo travelers or pairs, walking or renting a motorcycle to drive yourself is possible but be cautious about safety and prepare well for driving abroad.
For those using Vietnamese 3G or 4G SIM cards, you can update social media immediately while walking in the dunes. However, I suggest allowing extra time for the walk back as your travel companions might wait too long at the starting point.
Taste Fresh Seafood in Mui Ne
After enjoying the dunes, don’t forget to try fresh seafood in Mui Ne town, known for its fresh and diverse seafood. I, mr.hotsia, once tried a large seafood fried rice with shrimp, clams, crab, and squid for about 100 THB, authentic Vietnamese flavor. There are many grilled seafood restaurants here, including dishes rarely found in Thailand, such as Vietnamese lobster at prices cheaper than at home.

Accommodation and Transportation in Bình Thuận Province
Bình Thuận province has a long coastline and sunshine all year round, ideal for beach and sand dune tourism. Mui Ne is a major tourist destination in this province. If you travel from Ho Chi Minh City, it takes about 4-5 hours by bus with The Sinh Tourist company, which is convenient and affordable.
