Red Sand Dunes Mui Ne: Experience the charm of the desert in central Vietnam with mr.hotsia

When talking about deserts in Indochina, many people probably think of Mui Ne Desert in Bình Thuận Province, Vietnam. This place is not just an ordinary desert but is distinguished by its “red sand desert,” which has a unique charm different from the nearby white sand dunes. I, mr.hotsia, have experienced it myself and want to share a unique story with you.

Red Sand Dunes Mui Ne are located about 17 kilometers from Mui Ne town. The journey here is not very difficult, and if you have visited the White Sand Dunes about 25 kilometers further away, you will find that the “red desert” is perfect for watching an amazing sunset. The color of the sand combined with the evening sunlight creates breathtakingly beautiful scenes.

Looking at satellite images on Google Earth, the Mui Ne desert area stretches about 50 kilometers long and up to 15 kilometers wide, but on average, I, mr.hotsia, estimate it to be about 10 kilometers wide. This means the Mui Ne desert covers approximately 500 square kilometers. Interestingly, the red desert has scattered grass patches and is not a barren desert like those commonly seen. This gives the atmosphere a lively feel, unlike the white sand dunes where no plants grow.

How to Explore Red Sand Dunes Mui Ne with mr.hotsia

For travelers who want to truly experience the red sand dunes, I recommend buying a tour from The Sinh Tourist company. The program costs only 7 USD (about 210 THB) and lasts around 4 hours. The tour starts at 2:30 PM, which is the best time for photography because the sunlight is neither too harsh nor backlit. The tour ends with a perfect sunset view at the red sand dunes.

Besides walking and taking photos on the dunes, the tour also stops at Mui Ne fishing village, which offers a high viewpoint overlooking the town and sea, as well as the simple lifestyle of local people. I find this tour very worthwhile and convenient since you don’t have to drive yourself and have someone to take care of you throughout the trip.

Another option for those seeking more adventure is to rent a motorcycle or a jeep with a driver to explore on your own. I have seen groups of foreign tourists use this method for privacy and fun traveling independently. However, if traveling as a couple, renting a jeep might not be cost-effective. For solo travelers, I recommend renting a motorcycle or hiring a driver. Remember that renting a motorcycle abroad requires caution; I have written about this in a previous article. Interested readers can look it up.

Atmosphere and Differences Between the Red and White Sand Dunes

In my previous article aboutMui Ne DesertI mentioned that the white sand dunes have no grass at all, making them look open and clean. This is why most tourists choose to visit the white dunes first, as the overall view looks more beautiful and resembles a real desert more closely.

However, the red sand dunes have their own unique appeal. The intense red sand mixed with small patches of green grass creates a dimensional and vibrant image, unlike typical deserts that are usually yellow or pure white. This place is perfect for those who enjoy uniqueness and want beautiful photos in an atmosphere unlike any other.

Bình Thuận Province and Mui Ne: A Destination Worth Exploring

Bình Thuận Province is a coastal area with strong sunlight year-round and many beautiful beaches. Mui Ne is a famous tourist spot in this province, located about 200 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City and south of Nha Trang. Mui Ne is not just about deserts; it also offers natural attractions and an interesting fishing village lifestyle.

If you plan to travel in southern Vietnam, don’t miss taking a bus from Ho Chi Minh City with The Sinh Tourist company, which is convenient and affordable. I have personally tried the bus from Ho Chi Minh to Mui Ne and was impressed by the comfortable service.Read more about traveling Mui Ne on your ownhere.

Seafood and Local Atmosphere in Mui Ne

After playing in the sand until tired, don’t forget to try fresh seafood in Mui Ne, which is famous for its freshness and reasonable prices. Although slightly more expensive than in Thailand, the experience of eating seafood by the sea here is very worthwhile. I, mr.hotsia, especially enjoyed the lobster and grilled button squid at a seaside restaurant. Vietnamese cuisine emphasizes fragrant and balanced flavors.Read my food guide article for Mui Neto prepare yourself before the trip.

Accommodation and Transportation Recommendations in Phan Thiet and Mui Ne

If you plan to visit the Mui Ne desert, I recommend staying in Mui Ne town or Phan Thiet city, which are about 20 kilometers apart. Phan Thiet offers hotels at various levels. I have stayed at Kim Son Lau Hotel, which is clean and conveniently located next to the morning market. Summary

Red Sand Dunes Mui Ne is another destination I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend everyone to experience firsthand. The beauty of the red sand mixed with the evening sunlight, the fishing village lifestyle close to the sea, and the peaceful small coastal town atmosphere in Vietnam all make Mui Ne more unique and memorable than expected.

If you decide to travel there, don’t forget to prepare your camera and your heart, and choose the travel style that suits you, whether a convenient tour or renting a motorcycle to explore on your own. I guarantee the experience will be worth every penny.
