Food and Dining in Phan Rang, a small city full of flavors
Phan Rang or Phan Rang–Thap Cham, a small city in Ninh Thuan province, Vietnam, is a city where I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to stay for three full nights. The first feeling I experienced was the peacefulness and very low cost of living. Although it is a city that tourists rarely visit, when it comes to food, I can say it is "delicious and intriguing."
I stayed in the city center, just a few steps from the hotel were local restaurants lined up on both sides of the street. The weather was rainy at times, so I chose to eat two simple local dishes that I really liked:Banh Xeoor Vietnamese savory pancakes with crispy batter fragrant with spices, and the other wasVietnamese Coconut Rice Pancakeswhich are crispy with a mildly sweet and creamy flavor, easy to find and very affordable.
The atmosphere in most restaurants was simple, not luxurious, but full of warmth and friendliness with the locals. Sitting and eating hot Banh Xeo dipped in sweet and sour sauce amidst the sound of gentle rain is an experience I, mr.hotsia, will remember for a long time.
Exploring other flavors in Phan Rang
Besides the two main dishes I liked, I also explored shops selling grilled pork rice bowls for only 30 baht, a popular everyday dish in Phan Rang. There are many roadside coffee shops here where locals enjoy strong coffee paired with fresh coconut water, which, although expensive, remains a local favorite.
One night when I wanted to try something different, I found a vegetarian hot pot restaurant focusing on vegetables only. Although not very filling, it is a good option for those who want to eat clean or avoid meat. Additionally, I found that they also sellHainanese Chicken Ricebut I must say the chicken here is not cut; you have to eat it by hand, which was a very unique experience.
If you want to eat Pho noodle soup, it’s better to go to the night market opposite the hotel where I stayed because the Pho shops open at night and are very delicious. During the day, it’s quite hard to find food in Phan Rang, so I chose to eat coconut rice pancakes instead. Haha.
Lifestyle and Local Markets in Phan Rang
As a traveler who loves to absorb local life, I, mr.hotsia, did not miss visiting the Phan Rang morning market. There are two main markets in the city: one near my hotel and another called “Cho Tan Tai” located on the street behind the main market. The atmosphere in these markets is quieter than typical morning markets in Vietnam. Most vendors stay under shelter, and there are fewer people selling goods on the ground in a rustic way.
What I liked most was seeing red ox carts pulling wagons on the street, a rare and charming rural sight. In the morning at the market, I also tried green bean porridge cooked by an elderly lady until soft, without sugar, with a naturally mild flavor and very cheap at only 8 baht per bowl. It was a great breakfast for a traveler like me.
Connecting with Local Food and Lifestyle in Gia Lai Province
Although Phan Rang is in Ninh Thuan province, overall the atmosphere and food flavors in Phan Rang are connected with nearby provinces such asGia Lai Provincewhich I have visited before. There, local food is diverse and rich, such as the flavorful grilled chicken at Ko Nia restaurant in Pleiku city and the famous Vietnamese bamboo sticky rice.Local Food and Ua Liquor in Pleiku, Gia LaiAnyone visiting both provinces will clearly see the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine from different perspectives.
Traveling to visit Phan Rang is very convenient, especially when coming from Nha Trang Bus Station,Nha Trang Bus Stationwhich is a connection point between big cities and small towns in this region.
