Hot Pot in Pleiku, Gia Lai, Vietnam: A steaming hot pot in the chilly highlands
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to explore Pleiku city in Gia Lai province, located on the central highlands of Vietnam. With an average elevation of about 700-800 meters, the weather here is cool and chilly in winter. This atmosphere is perfect for enjoying hot dishes like “Lau Phoi” or what we know as Vietnamese hot pot in Pleiku.
The hot pot restaurant I visited is next to my hotel in downtown Pleiku. The atmosphere is simple but full of local charm because the restaurant uses plastic sheets to block the cold wind that chills customers to the bone. The hot pot set I ordered was mushroom and vegetable hot pot, priced around 100 Thai Baht per set—affordable and surprisingly delicious. The broth tastes similar to our sour curry, simmered with fresh mushrooms and various local vegetables to achieve a perfectly balanced sweet and sour flavor.
I ate this hot pot two nights in a row because it was delicious and gave a great warm feeling in such cold weather. The vegetable hot pot in Vietnam is called “Nuong Lau Ngo.” If you visit Pleiku and don’t try it, you’re really missing out.
Side Dish from Next Door: Aromatic Grilled Chicken Feet You Must Try
Not far from the hot pot restaurant, there is a stall selling grilled chicken feet, which I highly recommend. The chicken feet are marinated with local spices until the flavor penetrates the meat, then grilled until the skin is crispy and fragrant with charcoal smoke. When eating, you nibble them while dipping in a special homemade sauce. The flavor is intense and addictive, making you forget you’re full.
Eating grilled chicken feet alongside hot pot is a combination I’ve never experienced anywhere else. It truly reflects the local lifestyle, where people enjoy hot food to warm up and ignite a cozy feeling inside.

Pleiku is not just a city with delicious hot pot but also rich in diverse local lifestyles and traditional foods. I have written about Pleiku’s local cuisine in an article.Local Cuisine, Lau U, Pleiku, Gia LaiI tried highland-style grilled chicken, bamboo sticky rice, and fried chicken with fish sauce, which are dishes the locals take great pride in.

Travel and Atmosphere in Pleiku
To get to Pleiku, you can conveniently take a bus from nearby cities like Phan Rang or Nha Trang. I have written in an articleTraveling Pleiku, Gia Lai on Your Ownthat visiting here feels like entering a world of indigenous tribes and pristine nature.
Pleiku has cool weather all year round, especially in winter when the cold wind blows strongly, requiring restaurants to use plastic windbreaks as I experienced. The roads may not be as wide as in big cities but are filled with warmth and friendliness from the people.
Tips for Eating Hot Pot in Pleiku
When you arrive in Pleiku, don’t forget to try the mushroom and vegetable hot pot at the street-side restaurant near my recommended hotel. Besides being affordable, the taste suits Thai palates like mine very well. Also, if you like grilled chicken feet, don’t miss buying from the stall next door where the grilling aroma will lure you to order.
As for other hot pot menu items, if not mushroom or vegetable hot pot, I found some flavors less appealing and prices higher, so I recommend sticking to the dishes I mentioned.
