Giant pork sausage in Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province, Vietnam
When talking about pork sausage, many people probably think of the small-sized pork sausage found in markets or Vietnamese restaurants in our country. But once, I, mr.hotsia, traveled to Vi Thanh city in Hau Giang province, in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam. I encountered an extraordinary pork sausage. The pork sausage here is huge, unlike anything I had seen before. I roughly measured the diameter of the sausage in Vi Thanh to be about 12 inches, which amazed me and made me want to try it immediately.
Vi Thanh city is located about 240 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City. It is a small town that still preserves a traditional and warm way of life, especially the morning market that I have written about in an article.Vi Thanh Morning MarketWhere locals still use boats to travel to the market along the Kenh Xe No canal to buy and sell fresh goods, fruits, vegetables, and local foods like this giant pork sausage.
The pork sausage in Vi Thanh is commonly used in French bread or baguettes and seasoned to taste. The flavor is just right, not greasy, because the sausage here is made purely from pork meat without much fat mixed in like some other places. Another notable feature I observed is that the sausage has a hole pierced through the middle, which I think is a technique to ensure that such a large sausage cooks evenly and is not raw in the center.
From my tasting experience, the pork sausage in Vi Thanh tastes similar to the pork sausage from Ubon Ratchathani in our country, but here it is made much larger. The crispy yet tender pork texture and the well-marinated herbal aroma blend very well. I believe that our local pork sausage was influenced by Vietnam through Laos, especially Pakse which is nearby. It is also not surprising that Vietnam itself was influenced by France in terms of cuisine because it was under French rule for several hundred years, which led to the development and unique identity of pork sausage and other dishes as seen here.
The Way of Life and Market at the Heart of Vi Thanh
When talking about the giant pork sausage of Vi Thanh, one must also think about the lifestyle of the people in this town. I, mr.hotsia, spent over 8 nights in Vi Thanh and fully experienced the simplicity and kindness of the locals. Vi Thanh has the Kenh Xe No canal running through the town. People here use boats as an important means of transportation and goods delivery. I walked through the morning market and saw people bringing fresh fruits and vegetables by boat to sell, and customers arriving by boat in a lively atmosphere.
Vi Thanh market is not a tourist market but a real local market that still preserves traditional ways of life. I, mr.hotsia, often choose to sit and eat pho in the food zone of the market while watching the people of Vi Thanh come to shop, whether by car or boat. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, which is the charm I love the most.
Travel and Shopping at Co Op Mart Vi Thanh
If anyone wants to find more food or do some shopping, I recommend going toCo Op Mart, Vi ThanhThis mall is located in the town center next to the Kenh Xe No river. It is a popular mall in southern Vietnam. The ground floor sells fresh food, dry goods, and local foods such as pork sausage, fermented pork, and sausages that I, mr.hotsia, like to buy to keep for snacks.
The upper floor is a food court with a bookstore and clothing shops. Although this mall does not have famous fried chicken chains like Jollibee, it offers a variety of Vietnamese food options. I often stroll here to recharge after visiting the market and exploring Vi Thanh town.
