Vi Thanh Morning Market: Opening the Door to Authentic Life in the Heart of the Mekong Delta
If you ask me, mr.hotsia, what I like most when traveling in Vietnam, the answer is definitely the morning markets. I traveled to Vi Thanh city in Hau Giang province, the capital city located in the heart of the Mekong Delta. It’s not a touristy city with many foreigners, but the morning market here has a charm and vibrancy that I can’t find in big cities.
Vi Thanh Morning Market is located next to Kenh Xe No canal, a main waterway heavily used by locals for boat travel. The market atmosphere is full of activity with large paddle boats carrying fruits, fresh vegetables, and various goods sold along the canal. Some people come by boat to shop fresh from the market. I also took a boat ride to closely observe the market atmosphere, seeing locals dressed simply, arriving by boat or motorbike to shop and eat noodles comfortably. It was a warm and lively scene.
This market has many food stalls to choose from. I personally enjoy sitting down to eat pho (Vietnamese noodle soup) with its fragrant and balanced flavor at an affordable price. Here, a bowl of noodles costs about 12 baht only—cheap and surprisingly delicious. You can read more details about noodle shops in Vi Thanh from my article.12 Baht Noodles in Vi Thanhwhich I have written.
I ate while watching an elderly man bring his grandchild to shop and eat together, witnessing real life that is unembellished and not made for tourism. It felt like going back to my childhood when I visited Bang Phli Noi market near my home. That floating market still retains its traditional style with agricultural tools, fresh fruits and vegetables, and ducks, chickens, and fish sold along the walkway for customers to choose freely. Some locals sell just two ducks, which is enough for their simple life.
Vi Thanh market also has many unusual and interesting items such as turtles, softshell turtles, rice field rats, snakehead fish, and even sea snakes, which I have never seen anywhere else. It feels like a market that gathers the diversity of nature and local culture completely.
Travel and Lifestyle Connected to Kenh Xe No River
For me, traveling to Vi Thanh is not difficult because it is about 60 kilometers from Can Tho city. I took a bus that took only about an hour. The bus station is about 4 kilometers from the city center. I usually take a motorbike taxi to the city for a reasonable price, around 20-30 baht. Here, locals still use boats as the main transportation between homes and markets, as well as to nearby towns, which shows how life remains closely connected to the waterways.

Local Food and Community Atmosphere in the Market
Vi Thanh Morning Market is not just a fresh market but also a center for rare and delicious local dishes. As I mentioned, the noodles here are very tasty. There are also various fresh fruits, including yellow watermelon, which I tried while chatting happily with a vendor. It was a cultural exchange I really enjoyed.
For those who love walking markets and want to experience authentic local life, I recommend coming here early in the morning to see the full setup of stalls and trading by locals. It feels like going back in time when floating markets were truly the community center.
Connecting to Shopping and Entertainment in Vi Thanh
After visiting the morning market, if you want a change of atmosphere, try visiting the mallCo Op Mart Vi ThanhLocated in the city center next to Kenh Xe No canal, this mall is very popular with locals. The ground floor is a supermarket with a wide selection of fresh and dry goods, and the second floor is a food court offering various Vietnamese dishes. I like to stop by to buy Vietnamese pork sausage, sausages, and fresh milk here. It’s a nice resting spot after a tiring market walk.
If you visit at night, don’t forget to experience the atmosphere ofMobile Karaoke in Vi Thanhwhich I have recorded before. Motorbikes equipped with speakers and singers performing live. This is not just entertainment but also an impressive aspect of local culture.

I walked around the market, watched boats sailing along Kenh Xe No canal, saw the smiles of vendors and customers, tasted delicious food, and chatted with lovely locals. Everything made me feel this trip was more rewarding than expected.
