Vietnamese Lion Dance in Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province: A firsthand experience from mr.hotsia
Once in my travel life, I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to watch a unique Vietnamese lion dance in Vi Thanh City, Hau Giang Province, Southern Vietnam. The atmosphere was lively and serious, reflecting the deep cultural roots that Vietnamese people inherited from China, yet with a distinctive and impressive character of its own.
Before describing the lion dance performance, let me tell you a little about Vi Thanh City. This city is the capital of Hau Giang Province, located about 240 kilometers southwest of Ho Chi Minh City, in the heart of the Mekong Delta. The Kenh Xa No canal flows through the city center, creating a charming riverside lifestyle that I really like and have written about in an article.Vi Thanh Travel InformationI stayed here for as long as 8 nights.
Atmosphere of the Lion Dance Festival in Vi Thanh
I attended the lion dance festival here and had to buy an entrance ticket, which was definitely worth it. The performance in Vi Thanh is not just an ordinary show but a competitive lion dance with intense cheering and a large supportive audience. I saw lion dancers climbing tall poles in a way that looked very risky, but everyone performed with precision and no mistakes. It was truly excellent teamwork and practice.
The second lion in the performance impressed me greatly because they adapted the lion dance moves in a unique and exciting way. The two dancers had to coordinate perfectly, whether rolling together or moving delicately. Watching them, I felt their skills were very high. I also recorded video clips to keep. If anyone is interested, try to find and watch it. Full performances like this are becoming rarer.
Riverside Lifestyle and Morning Market in Vi Thanh
The lion dance in Vi Thanh also reflects the riverside lifestyle I observed while walking through the city’s morning market. The morning marketin Vi Thanh Cityis where locals sell fresh vegetables and fruits from large boats, and many people come by boat to shop actively. I enjoyed eating noodles at this market, which were very cheap, about 12 baht per bowl. The morning market atmosphere along the Kenh Xa No canal reminded me a lot of traditional floating markets back home because this place still preserves its traditional way of life firmly, whether by traveling by boat to shop or chatting with vendors. I tasted very sweet yellow watermelon, which was refreshing, and had friendly conversations with locals.
Lion Dance and Riverside Lifestyle Harmoniously Blended
The lion dance in Vi Thanh is not just a cultural activity but also part of the community lifestyle that fits well with this lively small riverside town. Many locals come to the event by boat, which line the canal. I experienced this atmosphere closely, feeling like I traveled back in time to when I used to ride a boat to a temple fair in Ban Rakat, Bang Bo, Samut Prakan, back home.
Additionally, I stopped by a shopping mallCo Op Mart, Vi Thanh Citywhich is a community hub. I liked going to the ground floor to buy Vietnamese pork sausage, nem, and sausages to recharge before returning to my accommodation. This Co Op Mart is located next to the Kenh Xa No River, making it convenient to reach, and it also has a food court upstairs. Anyone who enjoys simple Vietnamese food should not miss it.
When Night Falls: Mobile Karaoke Motorbike in Vi Thanh
Another fun experience I found in Vi Thanh was listening to music from a mobile karaoke motorbike equipped with speakers. The nighttime atmosphere was lively, with singers walking and performing songs at restaurants and street-side tables. I enjoyed beautiful Vietnamese songs like “Spring Leaf,” sung softly and charmingly. If interested, you can read more in my article.Vi Thanh Nightlife: Mobile KaraokeCheck out my article.
