hotsia kids School Break Trip 9/26: Crispy Pork in Hue, Vietnam

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia taking kids and families on a school break journey once again. This time we head to Hue (Huế), the former capital of Vietnam full of fascinating history and culture, along with delicious food that everyone must try, especially the signature dish “crispy pork.”

On this trip to Hue, I intend not only to visit places but also to let the kids truly experience the local atmosphere and culture. We started by choosing accommodation near the Perfume River. Here, you can comfortably stroll and enjoy the view of the Perfume River bridge at night, and conveniently travel to important city landmarks like the old Hue Imperial City and Dong Ba Market.Read about accommodation in Hue here

Crispy Pork: A Must-Try Signature Dish

For food in Hue, besides the hot noodle soup I previously shared inFood and Dining in Hue articlethe “crispy pork” dish here is absolutely not to be missed. Hue’s crispy pork is crispy on the outside and tender inside. The pork skin is carefully fried to a golden crisp without being hard, and the oil is not overly greasy. It pairs perfectly with hot steamed rice or nem nuong (grilled pork sausage).

I took the kids to try it at a small roadside shop near our accommodation, watching the cook prepare it fresh right in front of us. The aroma of crispy pork and Vietnamese spices filled the air, an experience the kids loved so much they asked for several more plates. Hue’s crispy pork is different from what we usually eat in Thailand, with a distinct taste and texture. I can say if you like crispy pork, you must come and try it here.

Evening Stroll Along the Perfume River

After a full meal, I took the kids for an evening walk along the Perfume River. The atmosphere here is unique. Around 6:00-8:00 PM, the Perfume River bridge lights up with beautiful alternating colors. It’s a chill vibe with young Vietnamese couples sitting by the river. The kids enjoyed running around and watching the lights reflecting on the water.

Though a small city, Hue is lively in the evening. I enjoy browsing the small riverside market where locals sell their goods. It’s not as large as markets in bigger cities, but the atmosphere is warm and friendly. The kids tried Vietnamese beer at very cheap prices (for adults) and sampled Vietnamese sweets similar to Thai desserts, which the kids who love sweets really enjoyed.Read more about night walks in Hue

Must-Visit Attractions in Hue

Hue has many tourist spots rich in history and cultural beauty. One is the old Nguyen Dynasty Imperial City, a UNESCO World Heritage site that tourists worldwide must visit. I recommend a relaxed walk around the palace so kids can learn history through architecture and stories passed down.Read about Hue Imperial City

There is also Dong Ba Market, where parents can take kids shopping and tasting a variety of local foods. I personally like this market because many vendors speak Thai, and prices are affordable, making buying food and souvenirs fun.

Travel and Lifestyle in Hue

Hue is only a few hours from the Thai border, making travel from Thailand quite convenient. I have tried taking the train from Hanoi through Vinh to Hue, which offers beautiful and impressive routes. For details on train travel, seeTrain from Hanoi and Vinh to Hue article

Every time I come to Hue, I feel the simple and friendly lifestyle of the locals. The kids see street vendors, fresh cooking, and a slower pace of life compared to big cities. It’s a great experience to take kids out of their usual environment to explore the wider world and truly learn about other cultures.

In Summary, Hue is the Perfect Family Destination

If you are looking for a place to take your kids or family during school break, I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend Hue. It has everything: history, delicious food, affordable prices, and an atmosphere suitable for all ages. Whether trying the signature crispy pork, strolling along the Perfume River, or visiting the old imperial city, every activity creates lasting impressions and great memories for kids.

Don’t forget to prepare for early mornings because the morning light here is beautiful and you have more time for sightseeing than in Thailand. If you enjoy relaxed walking tours, I recommend readingMy Complete Hue Travel Guideto plan a fun and thorough trip.
