Travel information for Huế, a World Heritage city that is easy to travel to and enchanting – by mr.hotsia
Huế, the capital of Thua Thien-Huế Province in Vietnam, is a city that I, mr.hotsia, must say is easy to travel to and offers a very worthwhile experience. Huế is located in central Vietnam, about a 9-hour bus ride from the Thai-Lao border at Savannakhet-Mukdahan. For those who enjoy unhurried independent travel, I recommend visiting Huế at least once because it offers a complete experience of culture, lifestyle, and affordable food.
The Old Imperial City of Huế, a World Heritage Site Worth Visiting
If this is your first time in Huế, a must-see isThe Old Imperial Palace of the Nguyễn Dynastywhich is registered as a World Heritage Site. Although it suffered heavy damage during the Vietnam War, it has since been restored and is fully open for tourists to explore. The atmosphere of this old palace is nostalgic and majestic, perfect for those who love history and ancient architecture. I, mr.hotsia, chose to stay near the Perfume River, making it easy to walk to the palace without wasting time or risking overcharging by hired drivers.
Strolling Along the Perfume River at Night in Huế
Another memorable experience I, mr.hotsia, want to share is walking along thePerfume Riverat night. Between about 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM, the bridges over the river are beautifully lit with alternating colored lights. It is a popular meeting spot for young couples in Huế who come to enjoy the romantic view. The cool atmosphere, especially in the winter month of January when I visited, is very pleasant. Along the riverbank, vendors sell small items, creating a night market vibe that is not too crowded, perfect for a relaxed stroll after a full day of sightseeing.
Dong Ba Market, a Shopping and Local Food Hub with Affordable Prices
Dong Ba Market is another place I, mr.hotsia, enjoy exploring. It’s not just a general market but a hub for local food and handicrafts of Huế, well known among Thai visitors. Many vendors here speak Thai because of the large number of Thai tourists. I also checked prices of food and goods in nearby supermarkets, which helped me know the real prices and avoid being overcharged. Additionally, the freshly baked French baguettes here are very popular, with Vietnamese people lining up seriously to buy them. I didn’t hesitate to join the queue myself.
Huế Cuisine: Delicious and Affordable Favorites of mr.hotsia
The food in Huế is distinctly different from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The menu here focuses on hot rice vermicelli noodles called Mi, which I tried during winter and found very comforting and delicious. The price is about 20-30 baht per bowl. There are also rice plates with curry for less than 30 baht, which kept me full and satisfied for several days. For those who like Vietnamese desserts, you should try them here because they are similar to Thai sweets, made with flour, tapioca pearls, red beans, soybeans, topped with coconut milk and syrup. The sweet and creamy taste is perfect for dessert lovers like me.Read more about food in Huế here
Accommodation in Huế: Affordable and Convenient
For accommodation in Huế, I, mr.hotsia, recommend choosing places near the Perfume River and Dong Ba Market because they are very convenient. You don’t need to hire cyclo or motorbikes, saving time and avoiding overcharging. Guesthouses cost around 300 baht per night and offer air conditioning, hot water, and good WIFI speed. They are suitable for travelers who want to save money but still enjoy full convenience.See my recommendations for accommodation and guesthouses in Huế here
Traveling to Huế via Savannakhet-Mukdahan
The most convenient way to travel to Huế is through Mukdahan Province, crossing into Savannakhet, Laos, then taking an international bus from Savannakhet to Huế, Vietnam. Buses run daily through the Lao Bao border. This route is not complicated and offers great value for travel because you get to see natural scenery along the way and experience local life.Read about traveling from Hanoi and Vinh to Huế by trainwhich is another option for those who enjoy scenic train rides.
Travel Tips and Warnings for Huế from mr.hotsia
Although Huế is easy to travel in, small issues often arise such as persistent hired drivers, motorbike riders, or vendors. If you’re not interested, just say “khong” (meaning “no”) and walk away. Don’t argue or negotiate because it will encourage more persistence. If you feel uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to call the police for help. Another common issue I encountered is being overcharged, which is normal in international tourism. I, Mr.Hotsia, suggest accepting it as normal and not letting it bother you. Travel with peace of mind and enjoy fully.
Final Thoughts and Personal Experience from mr.hotsia
Huế is a city that perfectly blends ancient heritage with modern life. I enjoy strolling along the Perfume River in the evening, watching the bridge lights and seeing young Vietnamese couples sweetly enjoying the parks. It’s a warm and romantic scene. Huế also has affordable restaurants and markets with flavors that suit Thai tastes like mine. Travel and accommodation are straightforward, ideal for budget independent travelers who want an authentic Vietnamese atmosphere. If you’re planning a trip to Vietnam, don’t forget to stop by Huế to experience it like mr.hotsia.
