Thien Mu Pagoda, a world-renowned temple in Huế, Vietnam

When talking about Huế, many people think of the old Nguyen Dynasty palace or the magnificent imperial tombs. But for mr.hotsia, “Thien Mu Pagoda” is another unforgettable place that I highly recommend everyone to experience firsthand.

Thien Mu Pagoda is located on the banks of the Perfume River. This is not just an ordinary sacred place but is filled with stories and history that have touched people worldwide. The temple became famous when Thich Quang Duc, the abbot of Thien Mu Pagoda, self-immolated in 1963 to protest the Saigon government’s religious oppression favoring Christianity. The photograph of the monk calmly meditating while burning himself became a historic image recognized globally, making Thien Mu Pagoda known ever since.

I had the chance to visit Thien Mu Pagoda in January 2011 when the weather in Huế was pleasantly cool. Traveling from downtown Huế was easy—just rent a motorbike or take a cyclo, and you’ll reach the pagoda quickly. It sits by the beautiful Perfume River, offering a peaceful and refreshing atmosphere.

One thing that impressed me greatly was the old car used by Thich Quang Duc to travel to Saigon for his self-immolation, preserved at the temple for future generations to see up close. Additionally, his heart is enshrined in a golden urn inside the pagoda, symbolizing the deep faith and respect the Vietnamese people have for him.

Inside the temple, monks were chanting continuously during my visit, allowing me to truly feel the peace and spiritual essence of the place. The temple’s architecture is beautiful and unique, making visitors stop to take many photos.

If you visit Huế and want to fully experience Thien Mu Pagoda’s atmosphere, I recommend booking a tour that includes the imperial tombs, the old palace, and ends at Thien Mu Pagoda, followed by a boat ride back to downtown Huế. The tour costs about 200 baht and includes a buffet lunch. I assure you it’s very worthwhile because the lunch is delicious and authentically Vietnamese. Strolling along the Perfume River, enjoying the view of Thien Mu Pagoda at dusk

After visiting Thien Mu Pagoda, I enjoyed walking along the nearby Perfume River. In the evening, the bridge over the river lights up beautifully, with young Vietnamese people sitting by the water. The cool January weather makes the atmosphere romantic and relaxing. I strolled, took photos of boats passing by, and watched the lights reflecting on the water. It’s a scene that any chill traveler like me would love.

Thien Mu Pagoda: Getting There and Accommodation in Huế

To get to Thien Mu Pagoda, you can conveniently use cyclo or rent a motorbike in Huế. If you want a budget-friendly and authentic local experience, try taking the train from Hanoi or Vinh to Huế, which mr.hotsia has recommended inTrain from Hanoi and Vinh to HuếTraveling by train lets you see local life and landscapes along the way, giving a nostalgic feeling of the past.

Accommodation in Huế is another topic I want to recommend. Staying near the Perfume River and Thien Mu Pagoda makes traveling much easier. mr.hotsia has suggested guesthouses and budget hotels inHotels, Guesthouses, and Accommodation in Huếwith prices around 300 baht per night. The rooms are clean, with air conditioning, hot water, and strong Wi-Fi, perfect for travelers who want to save money and experience authentic Huế.

Connecting with Vietnamese History and Culture

Thien Mu Pagoda is not just an ordinary tourist spot but a bridge between the past and present that deepens our understanding of Vietnamese history and culture. While exploring the temple and hearing the story of Thich Quang Duc, I felt the courage and spirit of the Vietnamese people who strongly hold onto their faith and beliefs.

Speaking of Vietnamese culture, food is another aspect I invite everyone to fully enjoy in Huế. Huế’s cuisine has its own unique identity, such as hot noodle soup different from Hanoi’s pho or affordable and very tasty rice with curry. Read more atFood in Huếto prepare yourself before visiting.

Finally, mr.hotsia wants to say that visiting Thien Mu Pagoda in Huế is truly an experience not to be missed—whether it’s the moving history, the beautiful Perfume River views, or the peaceful atmosphere that calms the heart. If you come to Huế, don’t forget to stop by here.
